You can't expect Emelin to be at 100% in his first 10-15 games back.

I would have waited to see if he's still effective before giving him all that dough.

The argument has merit, but the waiting game with Emelin is a dangerous one to play.

For one, the Habs don't want to judge him on those first 15-20 games. They don't want to evaluate him on that and then let him go, only to completely regret it.

and if he plays great, his value goes up. and if they wait longer, it becomes an idea in his head to test the market, at which point you lose him to a team that'll pay much more than the Canadiens just paid.
