Sprewell's career came to an unexpected end in 2005 when he refused a $27-million three-year contract offer from the Timberwolves, which he implied would not be enough to feed his children.

Jeffrey L. Kessler is a partner at the international law firm Winston & Strawn and co-chairs the sports law practice group. He has been involved in numerous high-profile suits regarding multiple sports and is generally regarded as a well-known combatant of the NFL.

Here’s a look at some of Kessler’s legal history in the sports world:

Ray Rice appeal: After Rice, a running back for the Baltimore Ravens, was given an indefinite suspension by the NFL following a domestic abuse incident with his fiancee, Kessler led the appeal that got the sentence reduced to two games.

Bountygate appeal: Four players from the New Orleans Saints were suspended by the NFL for their roles in the Bountygate scandal, where players were rewarded for injuring opponents. Kessler helped get all four suspensions vacated.

Adrian Peterson appeal: After Peterson’s role in abusing one of his children, the NFL handed the running back for the Minnesota Vikings an indefinite suspension, which Kessler was able to have vacated.

Brady v. NFL: Ushered an end to the 2011 NFL lockout in a successful antitrust action for a class of players in the league.

Belichick v. NFL, et al.: In 2000, Kessler represented Bill Belichick as the coach tried to leave the Jets and take the head coaching job with the Patriots instead. Although the league did not rule in Belichick’s favor, he was able to leave for the Patriots after the two teams engineered a trade.

McNeil, et al. v. NFL, et al.: In this 1992 case, Kessler won a jury verdict for NFL players to knock down free agency restrictions under antitrust laws. Following the win, the free agency/salary cap system in the NFL was negotiated during the Reggie White class action.

BA Player Class Actions: Kessler represented a number of NBA players in antitrust actions that helped lead to the current free agency/salary cap system in the NBA and the end of the 2011 NBA lockout.

Players Inc. v. Gridiron and Athletes First: Prosecuted two frontier IP litigations challenging the group use of NFL player images on websites.

Sprewell v. NBA: After Golden State’s Latrell Sprewell was suspended for choking coach P.J. Carlesimo, Kessler represented Sprewell and the NBA Players Association in arbitration and overturned the suspension and guaranteed contract termination.

Metropolitan Intercollegiate Basketball Association v. NCAA: Successfully represented the NIT in an antitrust litigation and jury trial against the NCAA.

North American Soccer League, et al. v. NFL: Helped the North American Soccer League knock down NFL ownership rules in an antitrust case.

Guidry, et al. v. AFL, et al.: Helped establish free agency in the Arena Football League through an antitrust case.

Oscar Pistorius v. IAAF: Kessler successfully argued for Pistorius, a double-amputee runner, to compete against able-bodied athletes in the Olympics.
