I would think it would have been a "keep your head up" kind of speech.

What would Snider (or the franchise) have to gain by wagging his finger in G's face at this point?

- johndewar

ed loves his guys so you're almost certainly right about that

Outside of Mason, the money spent most wisely this year is the millions to tell Bryzgalov to pound salt.
- PLindbergh31

Yes, because clearly the team is better off without him.

So you think they would be better this year with Bryz instead of Mason??? Well, they would be on their way to the 1st or 2nd pick for sure with a record of 0-15-0.

I don't know, and won't speculate on specifics. But I do think he tried to couch whatever he said in encouraging terms because Giroux's getting battered around enough as it is.
- bmeltzer

OMG they are trading Giroux.....

i think the opinion was fairly split about bryz. many saw him as the problem but there was a strong faction that saw thru his "issues" (he's a franking goalie, right?) to the real issues we see manifesting themselves at this time

Ron Hextall was the Assistant GM for the Kings when they won the Cup.

He was gone from the Flyers organization for 7 years.

Did his Flyerish ways hold him back in that gig?

- johndewar

Except he was the assistant and as far as we know was ultimately not the one who shaped the Kings cup win.

I want a GM that doesn't know the Flyers culture so that GM does not use the Flyers culture as a measuring stick for acquiring assets.

As long as the GM has to answer to Ed Snider, I'm not sure it will matter.

Mason's level of play is light years better than Bryzgalov's was. And for a fraction of the cost. So yes, the Flyers are better off without him record be damned.

Aged 100% but maybe someone that doesn't know what Mr. Snider wants will try and change what he wants.

i think bryz holds the flyers shut-out streak, no? if i'm wrong i apologize, but he played really well at times. truthfully i blame lavy for screwing him up. when you pay a guy $51 mil to be the guy you don't make him earn the job and then bench him for the biggest national spotlight game of the year. just stupid. i just picture lavy lying in bed (a la coach nickerson after losing to walnut heights) saying to his wife "do you think i should have played bryz in the winter classic?"

I think they would be 4-10-1.

It should be crystal clear to all that goaltending wasn't the problem last year, nor is it this year.

You know this thread has over 400 comments on it. Pretty damn impressive for a last place team that plays with no heart. I really wish the Flyers players cared as much as their fans do.

I hear ya, but I think any GM who looks at the standings understands what the Flyers culture is.

We used our Ace in the hole, aka the ole Kate Smith card, and it aint even Christmas yet

Bryz was mental. If Bryz was still here, we'd be talking about how bad the Flyers look across the board as opposed to how disappointing it is we're getting solid goaltending giving us a shot to win nearly every game if only our offense would show up.

He was also slow laterally, bad at finding pucks in traffic, and poor at handling the puck. Mason is a lot better in all three areas which is why this season isn't a complete disaster.

I guess that's one way to look at it.

The point of the game is to have a good record, though, and that is a key analysis point for me.

Besides, I'm not pissing on Mason or Emery. I'm just saying goaltending continues to not be the problem with this team. imho

Dean Lombardi was the GM of the Kings and he spent 3 years in Philadelphia as a scout prior to going to LA.

So much was made of the Philadelphia connection when the Kings won.

Clearly, there are things with the Flyers organization that are not as bad as you are making it out to be.

And I've yet to hear a quote from Mason that makes him look like a wannabe (frank)ing space cadet.

Bryz wasn't the problem with the team, but anybody thinking he wasn't a problem, a distraction, a headcase is delusional.

I defended Bryz a lot but you can't discount that he was mostly just ok. his save percentage was .905 which for as much money he was making was not nearly good enough. he had that one great stretch but was otherwise mediocre to good. and what has been said about his locker room issues just compounded things. Mason has been light years better

Plenty of folks would be laying the blame squarely on him saying his inability to steal every game is casting a pall on the rest of them thus rendering them ineffective.

These frankers sucked last year and they suck again this year.
