Sorry Paul…Can't agree with you about Kadri's second hit. The first one deserved a suspension not because it was vicious but because as Shanahan said Kadri was in control and need to try and avoid Backstrom and he didn't. As a result he hit Backstrom, made contact with his head and injured him. The second hit was just one heck of a hard, clean and legal hockey check that sounded worse than it was when Kadri's stick hit the boards/glass. The refs got that one wrong. Shouldn't have been a penalty at all. No need for Shanahan to give a second suspension and he rightfully he chose not to.

I agree completely, Shanahan got it right for a change...

Well, Stewie, now you see how to get lots of comments on a HB blog .... just express an opinion that in some why relates to the Leafs and/or is critical of a Leaf player! As it develops most of the comments in the thread will be increasingly unlikely to be either logical or germaine, but there will be lots of them.

Great blog, by the way, and I fully agree with all you points (which are similar to the ones I made to a Leafs' fan at the time of the incidents) and the reasons for them.

The problem is his head was down for a solid 3 seconds, its not like he curled up into the hit. Kadri full on had time to avoid hitting him, instead he continued (multiple strides through the neutral zone to get to him) through the hit and right through the head.

If the boards aren't behind him this hit would look awful and Grandlund would fall not being able to protect his head and hit his head on the ice even harder.

your ridiculous. what is one of the first things you learn playing hockey? play with your head up. not down. the game isn't meant to be played staring at the ice its meant to be played staring at your opponents and where you want to go. learn the sport.

On a positive note though, Kadri pushed the Leafs head shot Corsi way up. This will get those advanced stats guys off of Carlyle's back. Probably will get Kadri more ice time after his suspension is served.

The goalie needs to keep his head up now? Because a Leaf player decided to head shot a goalie? So now we all need to relearn the sport since the rules have changed due to the precedence set by the leafs?

Dirty hockey is dirty hockey no matter what player does it from which team. The Granlund hit to me wasn't a whole lot better than the Scott hit on Erikson. The collateral damage was less due to about half a foot.

I was in the Leafs thread this morning and boy oh boy was there ever whining about Chara and the Bruins and how they always get away with murder.

Someone put a few non-suspension highlights few weeks ago.

There is some case to be made there. Chara should have been suspended MANY times by now. For some reason, he is completely immune.

Scoop, I think pretty much every team/fan base subscribes to the "29-Team Rulebook" that Paul half-jokingly mentioned in the blog.

I am sorry but I think the biggest problem with all situations similar to these is the pure hypocrisy and ignorance that is Brendan Shanahan!

We all know Kadri looked ahead at John Scott back to back, knowing his own goons couldn't save him if Scott picked him over Nancy Kessel this time, and did the prudent thing to save his skin.

i agree the first hit was a suspendable hit. however i could not disagree more with your or the referees opinion of the second hit. if the league or the refs think the second is even a 2 min penalty they need to make it a NO CONTACT game. that was a hard tough hit that should be taken care of on the ice, not by the refs or the league but by the opposing team. then maybe we would get some respect amongst the players in this league
