We don't have to agree on it but it doesn't make me wrong. - Schenn2shine
can i agree with him that you're wrong?
nah, in all seriousness, i remember Carter playing wing sparingly. |

Alex Steen is doing pretty well this year, no?
And I remember Rask was a first round pick and I find it VERY difficult to believe he got no press. As I recall, they put all their eggs in the basket of Canadian Golden Boy Justin Pogge. - johndewar
You could probably make a stronger case for Brad Boyes than Alex Steen.
Nobody was shedding tears for Rask b/c they were too busy dreaming of Raycroft pulling a Steve Mason. |

for those that believe, as i did, that Luke Schenn played very solid defensive hockey last year for the Flyers....if he was continuing at that level this year, would everyone still think it was such a steal of a trade for Toronto? |

That' the other thing, if they do a B. Schenn for defenseman trade, there will almost certainly have to be more pieces or another trade, because then they'd have 9 NHL defensemen on the roster - Jsaquella
Huh. You don't think Andrej Meszaros would report to Adirondack?
(Come on, people! I haven't been rough on Meszaros in a couple of weeks...I was starting to get the shakes.)

Yes or no: Would you do Brayden Schenn for Jake Gardiner?
Just curious. - AllInForFlyers
Yes, flyers will need to add to that |

Not as much of a steal, but the Flyers did trade a guy who scored at a 30 goal pace last year and is doing so again for a defenseman who might top out as a decent second pair, physical player.
I mean, even if Schenn plays like he did last year, JvR scoring 30 a year is worth more. |

It's not that, it's the $3.1mm in dead cap space if you send him down. |

Man, whether Meszaros is on the ice, in the press box or in Adirondack, that $3.1 million is dead space.
Ahhhhhhhhh. That's more like it. My dark heart is fulfilled.

You seem to be right. Behindthenet has Carter and Giroux being on the same line 65% of the time and Giroux took 500 more FO's in 2010-11 than Carter. |

I think the big difference is it's easier to find a physical, top 4 defensive defenseman than a 30 goal, 60 point top line forward. |

Justin Pogge might be a punchline now, but Leafs fans, fresh off of Pogge's stint in net in the WJC in 2006, were probably looking at Pogge as their future when Rask was traded...... Raycroft was more of a bet hedging move as I recall. |

Mason's never been more valuable... and his agent is going to sell low on him now and leave a bunch of money on the table? Yeah, sounds likely. - Tomahawk

yeah...i guess with our stockpile of 3/4 dmen on the team it might seem like that's not as much of a need as a 30 goal scorer for sure at this moment.
but as i've said before, we did that trade with 6 potential 20 goal scorers under 25 years old. so it WAS a position of strength. i think if the dudes who were supposed to score to that clip early this year (Giroux, Schenn, Vorachek, Simmonds, Read) DID that (and Luke hadn't had his struggles) people would be less inclined to look across the border and sigh. |

That seems like forever ago, doesn't it? Jeff Carter playing for the Flyers feels like a lifetime ago, to me.

Probably because we view the Flyers in terms of chapters. When they traded those two, they ended the Richards/Carter chapter. |

The issue I have with it is, while they did need a young defenseman, they didn't need Schenn. I was sure they were keeping Carle when they made it, because when they did, they had two guys who were good with the puck-and one was 36 and the other a UFA in 7 days.

I know I'm right. Carter and Giroux had a huge game together back in January 23 2011. It was an afternoon game in Chicago. It was an outrange on these boards because Carter was our best faceoff man prior to the move.
In 2011 our top line was Hartnell, Briere and Leino. Mike Richards never played anywhere but center. We traded for Versteeg and off the top of my head I cannot remember who their left Wing was, I'm gonna say maybe Carcillo. Giroux was centering Carter and JvR for a while beforeing season's end. |

i see that way of thinking. that said, i think they wanted a young physical defenseman that had leadership qualities. i still think in the end Schenn, while may not put up the highlight goals and what not, will be an important piece of this team if he can get his level of play back up. |

I feel like I should just mention, for the record, that Patrick Sharp was little more than a spare part when we traded him to Chicago. Just throwing that out there. - AllInForFlyers
so gardiner will be better than brayden schenn? you just don't make a trade like that man |

Looking back at that forward group, it was a shame Pronger got hurt because they were primed for a nice run. |
