They have an upgrade they just won't play him cause they value Rosehill's awesomely-timed penalties too much to scratch him. - JAKEw1234
Also would like to see Rinaldo's spot upgraded.
(edit: but it's not going to happen. they're trying to develop him.) |

I'd rather see Rinaldo than Rosehill, but Zac hasn't controlled himself well this year. |

I haven't noticed him taking more sloppy penalities this year, he is just getting caught for a few more. I can't blame the 10 minute on him last night. The Refs let things get out of hand, and should have taken Ott to the box after hitting Simmonds, to restore the Flyers PP. |

I feel like that sort of thing happens to the Flyers quite a bit, so I'm not going to feel too bad about it. |

It was a fortunate break for the Flyers, but leaving Read all alone down low to have a beer, eat a sandwich then pop in a goal was just poor defense.
It's not even like it was bang bang. Couturier had to win the puck battle, get it to Downey who got it to Read. Buffalo had time to recover. Their defenseman just drifted. |

I was glad Read didn't overthink it when he had Miller down. |

Damn been waiting for the new blog... Anyway team looks good... Hope they can sustain this. Still think they made signings which are gonna hurt in a couple years last offseason, streit definitely hurting them now. |

Streit is hurting the team. If he's not providing offense, he's a below average player. I was much more upset about the Streit signing because he already has some serious limitations. It will only get worse over time.
I was thrilled about the Vinny signing, but we will at least get a few good seasons out of him before his skills start to deteriorate. |

How many years have we watched that happen to our goalies...It was nice to be in the holiday spirit and giving one of those goals vice taking one...
Razor also had a quietly nice game, although I think some of the rebounds he tried to send to the corners got a bit dicey at times...
I also think Downey is exactly who we though the was, and should be, making the trade with Talbot a big win for the Flyers... |

He's been passable these past few games -- I think that's the best we can ever hope from him.
He's not a terrible player, just monumentally overpaid, on an stupidly structured contract. For a guy making that kind of scratch, he's nowhere near as effective moving the puck as guys like Yandle, OEL, Keith, Enstrom, Byfuglien that take home similar pay stubs. He's nowhere near as good as Matt Carle, either. |

Is this the thread where the Steve Downie haters apologize?

He's got super-good hockey sense and very deft passing ability... you just wouldn't expect a player that small and slow to be able to generate so many plays... but he does. We're talking primary assists, not sponging easy points off better linemates.
That 3rd-line has looked terrific since the trade, and I would argue that that has been the biggest difference in their ability to score goals now. They're feasting on secondary/tertiary defenders, when with Talbot/Rinaldo there, they were only able to tread water. - Tomahawk
I've been saying all of this for the last week. My issue is people calling Homer's job before even seeing how a trade plans out. Talbot for Downie and actually believed that we lost in this trade? Based on what? So many people are stuck in the past. Some hate Downie for how immature a player he was five years ago. FIVE YEARS AGO! Some hold a grundge against Mark Recchi for behind closed door stuff we couldn't possibly know about. Steve Downie is a really good second or third liner. I think we shoulder resign him if it's a possibility. Downie for Talbot was a no brainer deal. |

One thing that bothers me is the way he makes poor reads. He's a veteran player, but is very susceptible to turning the puck over or making a bad decision. |

It actually reminded me of how the Flyers D looked at times under Lavy...bunching up with too many players watching gravitating toward the puck, leaving open men in dangerous positions...it was so refreshing to see that flip around to where the opposition was the one doing that while, for their part, the Flyers stayed with their defensive assignments in their own zone (mostly).

The trade has done exactly what we thought. It made the forwards deeper and gave Read and Couturier a skilled player.
However, the PK has suffered since Talbot left. People keep saying it's easier to replace a grinder/pk type player than a skilled top 9 player. I agree with this, but now they need to find a player to replace Talbot, because the current forwards are not cutting it on the PK. |

Homer deserves most of the criticisms that are levied at him... however, the Downie - Talbot swap was a pure fleecing. |
