UGHHHHH... Again... weak Draft year. NO ONE in the draft this year will be as good as Kessel, JVR, Rielly, even Kadri. Ekblad had potential to be, but IMO, the #1-2 picks this year are about in the same category as the #10-11 picks in previous years.
Calgary would be stupid to not take a trade for one of these above guys... And Toronto would be stupid to offer it. Non-issue. Not going to happen.

Rielly, I would want Rielly plus another prospect. I'd rather have Ekblad than Reilly.

Gardiner and JVR, I would laugh in your face.

Not saying the first overall (this year) isn't worth some players on the leafs roster. But getting these players will go against our rebuild and could hurt us in the long run if we try to take short cuts now.

Plus why would Toronto give these players up now, they finally have a playoff team.

Ignoring this, Calgary already has similar defensemen to Gardiner in Russel, and Brodie what Calgary needs is young defensemen that...well play defense, and play it well. But we can't sacrifice our prospects (we finally have a decent stock of them) or picks that will be ready when this team is ready to contend.

and im not saying u guys are goona pull the trigger, and we def. are not trading kadri, kessel, jvr, etc - gardiner...maybe.

you never know with a pick, i mean top 5 usually turns out to be an NHL player.

but, sometimes AHL for life...so when u have a legit proven NHL player, in more cases than not, thats the sure thing, not the pick.

Or in the case of slamming ek, you get banned at the drop of a bad Totes hat.

I love how you assume that it's going to be a franchise player. This isn't NHL14 little boy, there's no McDavid this season. Ekblad and Reinhart are great but you'd be a damn fool not to have any of those players on your team.

I guess we will agree to disagree. I don't think anyone in the draft this year will develop to be as good as any of these guys, unless there is some late-bloomer Zetterberg-type. (except Gardiner, but I only included him because he is the topic of this blog).

How do you know these guys won't be franchise players? Nobody REALLY knows how a draft is going to turnout until 10 years down the road. Ekblad was the 2nd guy after Tavares to get the nod for early entry into the OHL. How does he not project to be elite?

Kadri, JVR and Gardiner are not elite players. They are good players. You don't trade a 1st overall for one good player.

Kessel is elite as I said, so I would definitely think about that but would analyze the makeup of my team first.

Why can't other T.O. posters be mature like this? I guess time will tell. But I honestly believe no GM would trade a 1st overall for one of Kadri, JVR, or even Rielly. Kessel, probably find several GM's that would.

i'm smart enough not to answer that.

My thing is this; I just don't think I can handle another 9th place finish . Our team is finally on the right track, and even though I'd love to have Kessel or JVR, even gardiner at the right price (which for me is lower than you guys would want) all it accomplishes is bringing us back to a bubble team, never getting quality prospects, and never really contending for a cup.

I've watched more Flames games this year than any other, the games are more entertaining than ever, even with the losses. The thought of having more players like Monahan to look forward to is the only thing keeping me going.
