Meh, another set of backsliding MEH efforts.
Fire the coach, make a trade, good for a few games then MEH.
I dont know what it is but even less talented teams that know how hard they have to work actually do it regularly. Unless there is a flu bug in the team now, this was underwhelming and gutless for the most part and largely stupid.
Games like these the team reminds me of corporate slackers prarie dogging for donuts in their cube farm. - Steelmanpa
Reminds me of the USPS.. sold a mint condition sega genesis master system earlier this year and it went missing during shipping. No refund. No comoensation. No apology. Nothing. Ordered 200$ worth of gifts and the guy sent it USPS, tracking info said it was delivered tuesday. Never got it. Theyre telling me it was delivered and I must have lost it. I hate the USPS.
Happy tday and hday guys/gals. Be safe and enjoy the family time, you never know who want be around next year. God bless and be safe! |

Thanks for covering the team, Bill, and happy Thanksgiving and Hanukkah.
Giroux's contract definitely has me a little concerned given his play this season. Maybe he's not that driven right now because he's already got the big contract under his belt? Or maybe he's just not as good as most of us thought? Either way he's been a disappointingly average player this season.
And the idea that you have to bring in a better player to make G a better player is a bit confusing to me. What team or line wouldn't be better by bringing in top talent? The point is, G is supposed to be top talent...and he's just not getting it done. Ty McGinn has as many goals as G (and Jake) this season.

Last couple of minutes was really a microcosm of high-risk/high-reward nature of Mark Streit... nice pass to Giroux on the Vinny goal, then a nicely placed shot from the point for a G, then an absolute grenade of a pass to the last man back with the net empty to kill the comeback. - Tomahawk
I wonder if our style of play makes it tough on offensive dmen. We don't really work the point and normally use them for a last chance shot thing.

and when it was still scoreless giroux had basically the same set up as hedman did on his second goal but failed to score.....again - hogweed
If he had a damn winger with consistent skill he would have at least several more assists and be at a point per game, his numbers are down because its hard for him to produce when they can key on him so easily because he's playing with wingers that disappear too often, we have too much of this.
Either they disappear or they just don't have the skill consistently or heart.
Both Florida games were a complete joke! |

Slow start and not being fully prepared at puck drop is part of the problem. The other problem is they're not as fast as they should be. Hartnell isn't as effective as he used to be because he's usually arriving too late to really make a difference on the forecheck. The more the season drags on the more horrible the Streit signing is looking. He's almost as slow as Timonen and his shot is not as impressive as his price tag dictates. Watching these last 2 games really takes away the confidence I had developed in this team. I'm not sure they will make the playoffs. They're way too predictable. I don't think another NHL team has as many blocked and deflected away looks than the Philadelphia Flyers. |

yes, but when he gets the puck in the slot and has an open chance it isn't his lack of wingers that stops him from ripping home the first goal of the game, right? |

Positives to take from last night:
1. Streit scored his first as a Flyer, go him.
2. Vinny scored one in front of the Tampa crowd, that's awesome for him
3. Our 2 goals in the last couple minutes last night were just examples showing how we're now a "when the going gets tough the tough get going" type of clutch team that will come back from an opposing lead instead of rolling over and giving up. It's too bad we couldn't play like that for the whole 3rd.
4. We're getting the hell out of Florida. That place isn't good for us for some reason. |

Also of note was the weak backchecking efforts of both Jakub Voracek and Giroux, both of whom basically gave up on the play after skating hard back to their blueline. - bmeltzer
I missed part of the game, including this play ... but it is upsetting that this is an ongoing issue with G. More upsetting than the actual loss, imo.
Sooner or later Giroux has to start being an example in the work ethic department, or the Flyers will need to find someone else to wear the C. |

Amazed there aren't more posts after another loss, guess most of the "I Only post when they lose" crowd is attending to family stuff.
Yep, two lackluster efforts in a row after a good run. Not a terminal backslide, not a complete collapse, just a couple of poor games in a row against two teams that worked hard and played disciplined hockey.
These games also really showed the lack of a good two way defenseman can be a killer, especially the Tampa game.
If the Rangers are shopping Michael Del Zotto, the Flyers should be on the phone. If the Leafs are shopping Jake Gardiner, or if the Caps are shopping Dmitri Orlov, the same thing goes.
Poor passing and an inability to simply skate the puck up the ice really hurt the Flyers this week. The got back into old habits and poor execution and it killed them.

What price was too high? Our 3rd line center maybe?
I'm getting tired of watching pluggers & grinders float, when you lack top end skill & comprise your team of grinders you at least would win with hustle, tenacity & spirit.
They float, & glide, & show up when it's too late, can we please change GM's now?
Can we please stop concerning ourselves with the obsession of having young "some day, you'll see" centers & acquire a top line with consistent skill?
Can we please stop handing out contracts to over 35 defenseman, work on getting a top defenseman or somehow? Or at least formulate a plan of eventually acquiring one?
Hey remember when we were top heavy a while back with the legion of doom?
At least we were able to consistently put the opposition back on its heels from time to time. - puckhead17
They wanted a lot more than our third center a lot of what you're griping about is due to an Al Davisesque owner scrambling to win now. Changing GM wo t matter IMO ... Especially if we're bringing in another formerflyer... Need a house cleaning in the front office.

A speedy team like Tampa really exemplifies how slow our D is. They were playing playoff pace hockey last night and we couldnt keep up.
If they arent going to move Simmonds or Hartnell I'd honestly put Laughton on the block. Where is he going to fit on this roster? Assuming they keep Downie(they have no reason not to) the top 9 is set for quite a while. |

I wish it was just that simple. Giroux is the team leader. he is paid to set the tone, to be the example. the lack of effort from him lead directly to the second goal.
There should be a standard that Giroux expects from his teammates by showing it on the ice shift in shift out.
Maybe that second goal isn't scored with some hustle and a strong back check. It was a measuring stick game against a top team in the east and after the game you hear the Flyers starting goalie talking about the team lacking a spark, not showing up. |

Looks this is quite Simple. Flyers are just not very good. Look at all their wins. Who did they beat? Islanders x2, Rangers, Sens x2, Oilers, Buffalo, Florida, Devils and Pens. Only the Pens are a real contender and frankly I didn't think they deserved that win. Pens were struggling and had so many grade A chances that just missed the net. Flyers are a team in limbo waiting for guys to develop |

Raffl could be a decent player if he was capable of putting one of his shots on net. The guy misses wide every time he has a shot. |

Who are they trading for those players? Up in Buffalo for thanksgiving at the in laws went to the Sabres game last night worst few hours I've spent in my life. They are just a piss awful team. I'm thankful to not be a fan of that team. Makes me realize that our Flyers aren't so bad. Don't like the lack of effort that seems to be showing up a lot this year, but wow are the Sabres a bad team.
Have been able to watch the last two games but it sounds like that is a good thing. Like I've been saying this isn't a cup winning team, but they should be able to make the playoffs. Problem is they really can't afford to take any nights off and they are prone to doing that.

Yes, he failed to back check hard enough, no question. But these issues happened with Pronger wearing the C, as well as Richards and Jason Smith.
The team executed poorly, and didn't work hard enough. That's not just on one guy, there's three former team captains on the roster who are there to provide leadership, too.
They failed as well as Giroux. Far too much gets made out of the stupid (frank)ing letter on his jersey |

Agreed. They should be a playoff team.
As far as tradeable assets, they have quite a few. Orlov, MDZ and Gardiner are struggling and in and out of the line-up. Orlov has demanded a trade, the Rangers are shopping MDZ and the Leafs are supposedly listening to offers for Gardiner.
