Ugh.

Did anyone expect Downie to score 22 again? That's about as likely as Max Talbot getting 19 again. Not comparing the players, aside from they both had career years that largely exceeded their natural levels. Downie's good for maybe 15, Talbot for 6-9.

8.5 million a year for his age 32-39 seasons? I guess they had to do it.

Nope. But greater than 3 (as predicted by the current pace) would be nice. I don't really expect all that much from Downie right now because I haven't really seen him play much the last couple years. Unfortunately, I'm also starting to not expect that much from G, Jake, Hartnell, etc.

I wouldn't depend on either guy to pot goals... neither of them really play a game that focuses too much on pouring shots on net. What really can't be argued is that Downie makes his linemates a heck of a lot better, whereas Max didn't really have that kind of effect.

I wouldn't rule out another 20 goal season in his career but I wouldn't expect it. Downie is a above average offensive grinder. Best suited on any third line but definitely wouldn't look out of place in a second like role. Aside from the lack of scoring, I really like his game right now.

I don't see where they had a choice.

I re-watched the Wings/Flyers last match up from October two nights ago. I think many including myself felt Talbot could be a serviceable third line winger to Read and Couturier but truth is, he's a fourth liner. Talbot is a hard worker and a good influence but none of that can make up for talent.

There are some players at the top of the salary spectrum that you could argue are grossly underpaid... Hank @ $8.5M is probably a bit low, for being the perennial MVP, as well as being one of the most marketable faces in the sport, in one of its biggest media markets. Crosby is easily worth probaby 2X what he's making to the Pens. Toews and Kane are underpaid, too, for what they've done for hockey in Chicago.

I mean, they have Cally, Brad Richards, and Rick Nash......and hockey fans know and respect what they do, but, IMO, King Henrik is the face of that franchise.

What do you think he would have gotten as a UFA?

Is 10M out of the question?

Probably still $8-9, under current market conditions... although, like I said, I think he's actually really worth more. With the way teams have been 'overpaying' middle-of-the-road players, there's just not enough cap space to really pay the brightest stars what they're really worth.
