So the only way a kid from overseas can find an inspiration to back check is if he has one of the 4 greatest players in hockey history to show him the way? How do the rest of them get it done? - mayorofangrytown

yeah exactly. he doesnt seem to be contributing much of anything. - stayinthefnnet
If not for his contract, there are times when I believe he would be part of our 7th dman rotation. |

Now about Streit, he was a bandaid choice they made, to not part with young talent in a trade. I'm happy about that. Maybe they should have gone with a cheaper, less "name" UFA player who may or may not have worked out. I'm sure lots of people wish they did at this point. - Marc D
Tom Gilbert would have easily brought what Streit's brought, probably more, at a tiny fraction of the cost, and no long-term commitment.

I guess I'm most disappointed with his puck handling. I was led to believe Streit was a good passer, puck handler and shooter while his defense and skating weren't up to par. I haven't seen his passing on display at all this year. - PhillySportsGuy
He's made a few beauty passes actually, but they have been few and far between...I too expected more, and I still expect more from him going forward.

I don't remember seeing anything positive from Streit except a few nice passes on the PP to set up goals and his lone goal. He hasn't helped in the area the Flyers need the most help, which is moving the puck out of their own zone. |

5 actually. He's a product of playing with good player though. When G is playing well, Hartnell looks like the perfect complimentary piece. Most PFs look pretty bad when the talent around them isn't playing well.
Edit: not saying no blames lies with Hartnell. |

Pretty spot on. He doesn't have the natural talent to create his own offense. He's kinda like the power forward version of Matt Carle; he is a perfect compliment to a good partner/linemate. |

A #1 pick shouldn't have to be "inspired" to want to skate or improve his game. - jmatchett383
I think its more like people are trying to change his game. Or at least people in here don't find value in players unless they are perenial Selkie winners, that can throw devistating hits, and score 50 goals a year.
Not every players plays like that. A finesse player that has a natural nose for the net and super dangerous hands is exactly what the Flyers need. Not another pass first guy (Roo and Jake) not another slow unbalanced, brick hands power forward (Simmonds and Hartnell) Not another Mike Richards clone (Schenn and Couts). Give me a SNIPER. Give me a "I want the puck on my stick until its in the net" Type of player. Problem with having a whoel team that works along the boards is when you get the puck there is no-one infront to do anything with it.... GET ME YAKUPOV! |

Yea. The difference being Carle loses all self-confidence and Hartnell just starts taking terrible penalties and chasing the puck like a dog with a flashlight on the wall. |

i agree. a lot of times power forwards dont exactly create for themselves. at the same time, hartnell hasnt exactly been a force out there in making himself available and converting when given the opportunities. and 5, yeah sorry but thats yikes. i know he hasnt been injury prone as to missing tons of games, but he certainly isnt getting any younger. |

His signature that sticks in my head is when he shoots it and aims at the boards behind the net so it bounces off them and back in front. He's taught it to the youth, too. I've seen Gus do that a couple times, and I saw Luke Schenn try it last night. - JAKEw1234
And if the umbrella has collapsed, it's a good move. But sometimes it's good to just get it on net. |

That's not true. People on her loved Gagne when he was racking up his 40-goal seasons. But Gagne, very early in his career, decided to work on his defensive game and ended up becoming a sniper who was able to play responsible 2-way hockey. I'm not saying Yakupov needs to become a Selke Winner or even a PKer. But, language barrier notwithstanding (he's been here how many years now?), the fact that he said he didn't like skating and didn't like playing without the puck is worrisome, to me at least.
Plus, I've watched him play a lot, and he doesn't impress me. A pro-rated 30 goals as a rookie is good, but something about him and RNH I just don't like. |

I think the problem was the Flyers negotiated a deal with him right after his career year. If they waited a year, they would have gotten him for much less. I still like him as a player most of the time. I like having a guy that can provide offense and stir the pot.
The cap hit is high, but the cap will continue to rise and teams will overpay for other PFs and make Hartnells deal look alright. |
