Bill Meltzer: Meltzer's Musings: Streit, - bmeltzer
Thanks Bill
I understand the Flyers rationale in signing a guy like Streit, but in the salary cap era I think it's a foolish move. I would have rather they signed a "bargain" guy like Hainsey to a 1 year deal than allot 5.25 million of cap space to Streit. If the Flyers had done that, I don't see how they would be in any worse shape than they are now, and they would have much greater cap flexibility both this season and next.

Streit signing is a unfortunate repeat of the Bryz debacle... preempted the market, overpaid for a mediocre player, will probably end up in a buy out sooner than later.
Maybe the Flyers will finally show some patience this summer... I'm not holding my breath, though. |

If that is the case do you feel that the D in the Flyers system will really be able to make a difference in the next 2-3 years? Or what is a more realistic time frame. |

Homer has made some very good moves, but his bad ones are really glaring and having a bigger impact on the team. |

More like 3-5 years out, IMO. |

Do you really believe they'll be patient with these kids this time, though? It seemed like they were already tempted to keep Morin around as an 18-year-old. |

Good to see they are attempting to construct something of a philosophy for developing defensive talent. I'd like to see the organization follow through and see this to fruition rather than dumping the talent prematurely. Business wise, developing from within is always the better move. |

Streit just wasn't close to the same player since the bad shoulder injury...don't know whether it was something physical, him changing is game after the injury to protect himself, or even just age with the correlation to the injury being only a coincidence. Before that he played like a bargain at $4.5M. Afterward...not so much. He was still a good trigger-man on the PP though, and smart with faking shots and setting up forwards down low. |

Being patient and making a difference are two different things. Bill said these guys probably won't make a difference for 3-5 years in his opinion. That doesn't mean they won't be called up prematurely while they take their lumps at the NHL level |

So what does that mean for the next 0-3 years for this expensive, but highly ineffective d? Moves will need to be made during the offseason, but how is that done without making the same mistakes they've been making. |

Someone mentioned this a couple days ago but the flyers are built backwards..... When the young d is ready to truly contribute (age 27 or so) the 'young' forwards will be in their 30s. I tend to agree. Look at the hawks having an older Seabs and Keith in place while toews and Kane developed through their early 20s. They all hit their primes in stride. Our young dmen are so far away from maturing as an nhler that realistically its hard to rely on them being impactful for at least the next 5 years or so. |

The Flyers, IMO, will trade either Ghost,Morin or Hagg. The defense is old old old and the ones who aren't old are overrated, COBURN and SCHENN! Montreal was drooling over Morin at the draft, wanted too trade with Philly, maybe something can be done there but I'd rather see Ghost or Hagg get dealt. Next year Timo I think retires,Mesz is thankfully gone. I think one of Luke Schenn or Coburn wont be back on D, one gets moved. Lots of decisions to be made. |

I'm just gonna go head and say that Coburn is, in fact, underrated.
Carry on.

Yup maybe losing nearly 20% of his salary will send a message to the rest of the idiots in the league! |

He was sooo bad the last couple of seasons that its going to take more than 5-6 strong games to make me a full blown believer. Coby is what he is.... Mostly inconsistent. |

Coburn is the least of this teams worries.
Streit is a major disappointment on the other hand. |
