Aside from a Pronger in his twilight (whom is the exception here), how many clear cut top defensemen have been traded in recent history? - BulliesPhan87
Kimmo might be the last... but he was technically headed to UFA off a pair of double-digit goal/50+pt seasons. |

On a positive, unrelated note, today is my daughter's 6-week bday anniversary. Which means mommie goes for her 6-week lady doctor visit. Which means daddy may be very happy tonight. - jmatchett383

Okay, you tell me how the Flyers go about acquiring an elite defenseman (there's about 6 in the league), the most coveted player in the league today, and I'm all ears. Really, what's the trade slick? How are we going top acquire of of Weber, OEL, Pietrangelo, Karlsson, Doughty (if he's even really elite), or Keith. - jmatchett383
You're argument has been about keeping our young guys and not trading, not about who we would get in a trade, slick.
So, if its for a #1 D (of the elite variety), but would cost some young talent, you might be willing to do it?? That's alllll I've been saying.
Who knows what the requirements would be, but I sure as hell would be willing to give up whomever (G and Mason aside) to acquire that #1 elite defenseman. |

None. McDonagh was, when he was an unknown in (I believe) the Gomez deal. The only two that come close to the criteria (that I can think of) are Bouwmeester and Campbell. And I wouldn't consider them top defenseman. - jmatchett383
So a guy who wasn't yet a top defenseman at the time of the trade (correct me if I'm wrong on that description, folks), and a salary cap fueled trade. The former is possible, but still a gamble and a price we more than likely won't find. The latter doesn't seem likely, given then massive increases in the salary cap that're coming.
I'd love to get that top defender, but I just don't see that trade as available, yet. |

Yes, if it's an elite player (again, not a top-pair or first liner, an ELITE player) and you're not gutting your youth, then you do it. But my point is that those players aren't readily available, and when they are, you have to give up a huge amount to get them. We got an older, 34-year-old Pronger for Lupul and 3 1st round picks. What do you think a comparable player in his mid-to-late 20's will require? You want that #1 defenseman? Fine, say goodbye to (most likely) B. Schenn, Couturier, Voracek, and a 2-3 1st round picks. Hey, in 5 years time, we might actually have some players to go along with that defenseman and Giroux. |

They have a far better chance to trade for a guy like Brandon Gormley who might be a top pair defenseman some day than trading for an established one...unless they get a desperate team who has a top pair defenseman and needs to make a move. |

No, socialism is socialism. The idea that the two are equivalent is rightwing media magic.
The problem is, nothing is black and white. We don't have - and I would argue can't and shouldn't - pure capitalism or pure socialism but a mix of both. But that sentiment is going to depend upon your (my) societal goals and expectations. - wolfhounds
No point in debating it. Democrats have become a vile hate filled bunch. Sad to see considering my 15 years with them. |

Yikes. Where do these absolutes come from?
Define "Liberty". Is it having the most people in prison of any developed nation? Citizens United? A constant state of war? - wolfhounds
None of that had anything to do with liberty. None.
Who wants to ban trans fat, large soft drinks, tobacco products, gasoline powered everything, and all things with sugar in them?
Your idea of liberty differs from mine. Let's end this and get back to hockey. No common ground exists between us anymore. |

We have a fair chance of picking up a McDonagh type in the mid-first or second round a la McDonagh or Weber. |

I can't actually say this is a rumor or not because I'm not going to give my source out to eklund. There is no trade between NYR and Habs and there wasn't a lot of talk about one.
Rangers have DZ on trade block but nothing close. That said the guy doesn't have complete access to the GM. Does work directly under him. |

I guess I just have a hard time seeing a team being desperate enough to move a top defender. They're an invaluable treasure in the NHL right now, it seems. But then, I guess anything is only impossible until it happens. |

Again, depends on how willing you are to overpay and gut your team. Hell, I'm sure we could land Shea Weber if we don't wanna have a good team for the next half decade or so. But we could get him. |

They thought they had that in Nashville. Offer them a young potential #1 center (Couturier OR B. Schenn), a potential top-line winger (Voracek), a young blueliner (MAB), and 2 1sts.
Or 4 1sts
Didn't work. And that was a trade offer for a guy who was 1 year away from UFA. So that was a LOW offer. |
