They don't. Wilson's hit was neither clean, nor legal, in the eyes of the NHL. He received a 5 minute major and a game misconduct. So even if it didn't garner a suspension, it's still a penalized hit, which means it wasn't a clean hit.

I knew their wasn't going to be a suspension. Only reason there was a meeting was because of player safety stuff.

Bias or not, one thing remains true: deciding suspensions based on the result of the infraction rather than the infraction itself is just foolish. Sadly, I really think someone is going to be crippled or killed before the league wakes up.

I also question having a former player making these decisions. IMO a former ref such as Paul Stewart would be much better qualified to make these rulings.

Pretty surprising the referees didn't ban him from the league for embellishment right there on the ice.

I give the kid full marks for wanting to play, but for the Flyers not to even give him a concussion test after he nearly had to Kapanen it to the bench was very disturbing.
