In terms of the long term picture I think the big thing you have to look at, is bringing in Hextall asap. While he is able to evaluate the team, I want him to have the chance to put his mark on it before the trade deadline passes. As well as the draft.
In terms of contract extensions, I think you obviously have to look at giving Mason an extension, but no more ridiculous numbers. Give him 2-3 years, a bridge type deal, and if he proves he can give you that consistent stability. Pay him after. Giving him some huge long term deal, will just show me this organization has learned nothing.
Now for who to ship out, keep on, etc.
1. I would like to see them keep Emery on as a back-up if possible. He seems to be good in the role, and I would like to give Heeter a bit more playing time in the AHL.
2. You have to try and unload Hartnell at this deadline. Take a bit on some of the salary if need be, and expect to get little of value in return. I could see a team like Edmonton, Calgary, Vancouver, Toronto, or St. Louis interested.
3. Mark Streit needs to be bought out in the off-season. In doing so, you ideally bring back Timonen at a reduced salary/role. I would rather have Timonen on for another 1-2 more years, instead of Streit for the next century. Timonen is the better player, and mentor.
4. Your only untouchables at this point are Voracek, Laughton, Simmonds, Couturier and Giroux. I would also move Grossmann into this role, I think he is a player who is really undervalued.
5. You attempt to package some of the remaining pieces for either Edler, Buff, Yandle or Gardiner.
Your lineup for opening night next season:
Gaborik-Giroux-Voracek
Laughton-LeCavalier-Simmonds
Read-Couturier-Downie
Raffl-Ott-Cousins
Coburn-Buff
Pitkanen-Grossmann
Timonen-Lauridsen/Alt |

i feel as though grossman is the better of those two as far as meeting the requirements of that type of guy. schenn is pretty redundant. that being said, i would be curious to see what you guys would be willing to move to acquire a good puck moving dman - stayinthefnnet
Anyone other than Giroux, Voracek, Couturier and Mason
Among prospects I wouldn't move Morin or Hagg |

I'd like to see Simmonds and Laughton put in that mix personally.
Hagg for the little bit I read is struggling. I think ob or bill would know better though. |

This I pretty much agree with. A lot of people seem very hesitant to move Simmonds. That I dont understand why. The need for a D man so very evident at this point you move what you have to.
I cant see this team staying above .500 without a 1st pairing D man. Cant say that about any of our wingers. |

I'd be willing to move Laughton in a deal for a good mobile dman, you would still have Giroux, VL, Couturier and Schenn in the middle. I love Simmonds, but if thats what it takes to get the right dman so be it. When it comes to finding forwards, the Flyers do pretty well. |

Ill give you my reason. Going back to that Anaheim team that won in 2007, Simmonds reminds me a lot of those second tier guys that were so crucial.
Every team has players like that, and I want Simmonds around long term. The most recent example? Just look at Andrew Shaw. |

They can replace anyone but Giroux & Couturier in free agency, to be honest.
I like Wayne Simmonds, but if I can turn him into a good defenseman, he's out the door. You need good second tier guys to support the stars, but you can't be married to that second tier talent at the expense of filling vital holes. |

Sure, but those guys dont mean a thing without having a complete team around them and this team has a massive void on the blueline...
Its wait 3-4 years for Morin or Hagg or move someone. They almost certainly cant move Hartnell so Simmonds is the next guy in my eyes. Thats nothing against his play but he plays one of the few spots where we actually have depth in the system to not be crushed by his loss. |

I would like to see the Flyers try the following for next season:
Offer both Schenns and this years 1st for big Buff
Buyout Streit and re-sign Timonen to a 1yr deal
Don't re-sign Downie, put the cash towards a higher skilled player
Unlike some, I don't think its a lock that Vanek is going to Minnesota. With Hardings medical issues, they may be in the market for a goalie and I could see them going after Ryan Miller for big bucks. The Flyers could end up looking like:
Vanek-G-Jake
Raffl-VL-Simmonds
Laughton-Couturier-Read
4th- a FA center with some combo of Rinaldo, McGinn, VDV or Cousins
Coburn-Buff
Gus-Grossmann
Timonen- Alt or Lauridsen
Masonl
Emery or FA
Edit: Trade Hartnell even if you have to eat salary and/or give him away |

I did the capgeek math on this and it seems like some of it is a possibility. I didnt add in Ott and i chose Yandle instead of Buff but it came out pretty close. Also are you sure you really want Gaborik? Im not certain. I think this might be one of the instances where the price outweighs what he brings to the team. |

Thats what it will most likely cost to land a top pair dman. To other clubs the Schenns look like a 2nd line forward and 2nd pair dman at best, thats not going to land you a Buff or Yandle. |

Confused by a lot of this.
I actually like Buff. But that is wayyy too much to give up for him.
Streit being bought out would affect our cap in too much a negative way. Address the top pairing and let him settle into a 2nd pairing role.
I wouldn't chase Vanek. It's Suter all over again. There will be a few other options via FA. I would look at Gaborik on the cheap. Matt Moulson as well. |

Personally I think that both Schenns and Simmonds could get a Yandle type defenseman. I would not move this first. I love too many of the potential draft candidates. Right now im in love with: Kasperi Kapanen, Julius Honka, Jake Virtanen, Jakub Vrana, Roland Mckeown, and my pipe dream William Nylander. 5 out of those 6 are possible(ish) |
