Woah woah woah. We have POTENTIAL. Hitching your teams fortunes on Gards and Rielly is a huge mistake and over estimation. - systemtool
and hitching it to Dion for the next 7yrs @7mil isn't??... |

Leafs have there future #1 and #2 in Rielly and Gardiner...Sure the leafs D might hurt in the short term but thats a boatload better that hurting with a 7yr/7mil cap hit for a pylon....
Best hockey Dion has played in a leaf jersey is in the final year of a contract...Ya lets McCabe that female dog...We seen this way to many times before... - Fruitcakenipple
That future is a few years away. Throwing rielly and Gardiner into Dion minutes right now is a terrible mistake. Let them develop while Phaneuf eats minutes. He us far from a pylon. |

Has it ever occurred to the people that are against the Phaneuf deal that he A could improve as a player or B could be traded 3-4 years down the road at which point his contract will be an after thought?
bunch of f'in drama queens on here, this contract is not a death sentence.

The better of the two options right now yes. And not ruin Gards and Rielly by rushing them into roles they are nowhere close to ready for? Well worth it.
We're a better team with Phaneuf, Gardiner and Rielly than we are with Gardiner and Rielly.
With Dion gone, we'll just run Gardiner out of town next. Yippee. |

Newf.......... Leafs are kind of stuck in this situation. They need him badly, even though he is not a 7 mil a year defenseman. If we don't give it, he walks. That puts us in a worse situation.
We are caught between a rock and a hard place. |

This is called speculation, not fact. A team doesn't give away their Captain and #1 D in hopes that 2 kids will become something. Besides Gardiner isn't a 1 or 2. |

Actually, he was better last year and this year than he was the year he got here.

I wouldn't say he's regressed. I'd say this year is his best two way year ever. But then again, it is a contract year.
Bigger mistake than the 7 mil a year will be if he gets a full blown NMC. |

If Gomez can be traded I think Phaneuf can be traded.
Both Gomez and Brian Campbell had 7 million dollar contracts during the previous CBA where there was a lower cap and they STILL got traded. |

I respect your opinion, that you label truth, but I think he is one of the better defensive Dmen in the game. His offense has decreased, but I really dont care much for that. The whole teams offense has decreased this season, and the whole team is struggling to play D. |
