But so is Phaneuf so what's the difference? - Yeti1181
my point exactly
the leafs have a long history of over paying their players just because they happen to be the best option... doesnt make it right

agree wholeheartedly on franson
playing against third and fourth lines he is adequate defensively... against scoring lines he is next to useless - Dozzer
Moving franson up is a short term fix..1-2yrs the most not the 7 that they about to commit to with Dion.. |

but they dont bounce.. he hits them in with his stick.. last game is a perfect example.. he pulled his stick back to try and clear and just back handed the puck into the net. - Dozzer

Funny Shea weber have dropped dramatically since he lost Suter. Hhhmmmm must just be a fluke though that happens. - Yeti1181
He's also on a garbage team without their star goalie. Doesn't help his +/- when he's got a couple kids tag teaming in net. Still a big fan of Weber. |

oh you mean move franson up and NOT sign dion...
yes.. thats the defense reset i want.. sorry misinterpreted what you were saying
the leafs forward core is young enough to survive a defensive step back for 1-2 years... it would be the wise move.. but its not the maple leafs way |

Who do you replace him with??
There are no defensemen out on the market. If there was, there are a number of teams that are looking for defense. Ottawa, Edmonton, Detroit, now boston. Top 4 defenseman is the rarest commodity on the NHL market nowadays. |

I was just informed he was a number 2 not number 1 anyways so this point is now moot. |

If Franson is a top pairing D then just start dumping players and do another rebuild because that's a joke... |

So we've heard your opinion on Dion, which you seem very stuck on. What would your moves be if you were in Nonis' seat? Who would you target, and for what? What would your ideal lines look like within the bounds of reasonable moves? |

Well its either there, or Kadri goes to the 4th line. McClement playing the 3rd line shutdown role is excellent. |

my whole point is you dont. you let him go, take a step backwards, and reset the defense.
the goal isnt supposed to be first and second round exits.. and the leafs wont win a cup with him as a number one.
he isnt good enough to shut down the best offensive guys in the game when they amp up come playoff time |

No u need some production from ya 3rd line...Playing McClement there kills the line in terms of production...Play McC on the 4th line where he belongs... |

so the argument here is DP would be better if he played with one of the best in the game?
yeah.. thats the definition of a number guy - Dozzer
Seabrook was just a name to use. Someone reliable who can perform on the same level as DP.
I concede that Dion isn't the best in the game but he's no slouch either. Why can't the leafs have someone beside him and they form a great tandem?
If you're no fan of Weber than be happy that our "#2" in DP isn't being paid like him! |

'for starters i would put dion, franson, and reimer on the block.
i would try and move bozak as well since he is nothing more than a poor mans bolland... but the idea of someone taking bozak at that cap hit is well.. laughable. |

Find me a stat that proves Phaneuf puts in more pucks in his own net that anyone else. You can not continue to use your opinion is fact. Unless you watch every game of every other team you are merely theorizing this because you watch more leafs games then other teams. |

we are going to pay him like he is one of the best in the game and i am willing to bet he doesnt even make team canada
for years he has been considered the most over rated player in the game by his own peers ffs. |

And in two years, we would still be without a top pairing defenseman. Where do you go find someone to replace him? I don't know of any team that is willing to part with a top 4 defenseman. |
