I have a solution for all.
3 points for regulation win.
2 Points for OT win. (5 min 4 on 4, 5 min 3 on 3)
1 Point for Tie. ( playing 3 on 3 for 5 minutes your not likely to get too many ties, even football has ties, its just rare.)
0 points for a loss at any time.
The point is to win the game in regulation. If you cant do that, then you lose a point, even if you win. Then you have to win in OT, or you lose another point in a tie.
IMO the better teams will rise to the top. The teams that win in regulation. The teams that rely on OT to playing close defensive games will be in trouble because while the good teams are getting 3 points, they will only be getting 2... if they win. - youarewrong
This, I might be okay with.

Stick handling, accurate shooting, good goaltending.
Which one of those is not part of hockey?
Because that's all the shootout is. And all of those things are part of hockey.
If you want to call it "artificial", then fine.
Gimmicky? Sorry, you're not using that word right. - johndewar
would you call an NBA game deciding a tie with free throws a gimmick?
how about field goals in the NFL to decide? |

Not to me. I hate the shootout. It's a pure gimmick and a cheap way to settle the game.
If I'm watching a great, entertaining game, with lots of action, hitting and great plays, my reaction when they go to a shootout is one of disappointment and anger, because it's simply not fun for me at all.
For every great goal by a Giroux or Datsyuk, there's three shots that go wide or get stuffed into a goalie's leg pad. I don't feel a sense of victory after a shootout win. I feel dejection. - Jsaquella
They could bump the 4 v 4 OT to 10 minutes and see how many more games get settled in the new format vs the old.
Here's my order of preference for determining a winner in hockey:
5 v 5 Regulation Hockey.
4 v 4 OT Hockey.
3 v 3 OT Hockey.
Shootout.
Tie. |

There are no ties in the NBA.
And ties are so infrequent in the NFL, players in that league had no idea they even existed. |

There should be no "loser point".
This was probably put in to make the "participation trophy" set happy..... - johndewar
Actually, it was to encourage teams to open it up in the original 5 minute OT. When the NHL first added OT, teams would really sit back to avoid losing the point. Unless one of the teams was really desperate to get two points, it was 5 minutes of boredom.
So the NHL added the OT point, to encourage teams to simply try hard to get the second point, without having to worry about losing the point gained. |

I think the idea that Hockey is a skill game and shouldn't be settled by individual skills. |

I'd rather see one 10 minute OT at 4 on 4, no points awarded for a tie and then you'd see teams trying to win in OT, rather than playing for the tie. |

i dunno, that's close to right but I don't like getting points for any loss. Seems stupid that a team can climb the rankings by losing. - JAKEw1234
the important part of the equation is a true win gets you 3 points, not two. so those loser points don't matter as much in the standings as they do now. |

I was watching the Kings-Blackhawks game last night, and realized that I missed Richards and Carter. But would anyone really - today - trade Schenn and Simmonds for Richards, or Jake and Coots for Carter? Why does the national media continue to call them "bad trades?" |

It is a team game played by individuals who form a coherent unit that is assembled by a group of specialists whom, in combination, form an entity greater than oneself.
It's kinda like Megazord from the Power Rangers. |

because honestly, the game ended in a tie the last two nights. - Jsaquella
That's how I feel.
Every now and then, I'll calculate the "real" win/loss record, counting shootout wins as ties moving overtime losses into the "real" loss column.
Which would make the Flyers something like 16-17-6. |

I totally agree.. Coburn easily could have assisted on 3 or 4 goals.. but damn it.. that goalie was too good.

Because the Kings won the Stanley Cup. That's it. I love Richards & Carter, but the Flyers got good value in those deals.
Also a lot of national media people seem to forget that the Flyers didn't trade Carter to LA. They also didn't trade Quick, Doughty, Brown and Kopitar to the Kings. |

I miss Richards a lot (though I believe in B. Schenn, and I like Simmonds quite a bit).
Carter--Couldn't care less. Hope he cries himself to sleep every night on his piles of millions and millions of dollars and Stanley Cup ring. |

US has produced some serious players over the past decade.. I think in 10 year we will see a big shift in power. The US development program is amazing. |

Carter whined his way out of Columbus, to LA & a cup, I feel a certain way about that as well.
Edit I like Simmonds, & I feel Schenn may be our best way to help our D through trade, once Laughton gets here. |
