"From the bench" shenanigans is for pussies. Take care of it on the ice, where it should be taken care of. - Scoob
Hard to do that when they game is over. I think I would be more behind Hartman if he had been more blatant and instead of clipping him in the face just gave him a solid hook ya know? |

In a wussy manner, but it is on the ice so I give you half a point for that. |

Should have thrown them both out on the ice in the waning seconds and let them settle it the old fashioned way. - wolfhounds
Agreed.
They should have done "rock, paper, scissors" at center ice. |

Exactly. That's why you have these little incidents. There was one a few years back between USA and Canada. |

Don't know. Don't care. I'd guess that fighting isn't even allowed in that tournament. I could be wrong, though. |

Okay, well then if that's the case your argument is slightly invalidated as how is a player supposed to respond on ice if he can't drop the gloves? |

Obviously I should have just quashed and not engaged. This is a capitalist site and therefore will quash political discussion in the interest of not driving away the eyeballs here to talk hockey.
Stop with the political discussion before your political ideas (at either extreme or moderate positions) discredit your hockey opinions in the eyes of other posters. |

The game was effectively over when Hartman did what he did. |

He can drop the gloves. If fighting isn't allowed he'll be ejected.
Were it not the end of the game there are certainly other, and legal, ways to make a player "pay" for his actions.
I'm puzzled that people are actually defending a player acting like that on the bench. I'm nearly certain that if a Russian player did it to a US player there wouldn't be the same defense of the action.
I think I'll chalk it up to misguided, youthful misunderstanding (of hockey and politics) and move on.

There is thirty seconds left of a 5-3 game, you really think scoring is going to get it done?
Listen, what Hartman did was a direct response to the provocation by the Russian team. Their actions were completely inappropriate and uncalled for. The players could jeer at the USA team all they want at their own bench, as that happens all the time at every single level of hockey. However, to make a direct motion toward them on the way to their bench (which is completely unnecessary), is calling for a response. Hartman tapped him in the face with his stick, he didn't slash, he didn't swing a punch, he threw out his stick.

I would hope the US player would have a bit more professionalism than that. However, as I mentioned before USA did this once against Canada a few years ago, and the same result happened. American player got in the face and went down, a scuffle ensued, and in fact our beloved JVR got the worst of it.
All warranted in my opinion. |

Yup, I know. Rock, Paper, Scissors was the only real way to resolve the issue.
Did they kick Hartman out of the game after reviewing the incident? |

Looks like you chose to ignore my statement on how the American player deserved the retaliation. |

I suspect Hartman will face a sanction (IIHF?) of some sort. |
