There is thirty seconds left of a 5-3 game, you really think scoring is going to get it done?
Listen, what Hartman did was a direct response to the provocation by the Russian team. Their actions were completely inappropriate and uncalled for. The players could jeer at the USA team all they want at their own bench, as that happens all the time at every single level of hockey. However, to make a direct motion toward them on the way to their bench (which is completely unnecessary), is calling for a response. Hartman tapped him in the face with his stick, he didn't slash, he didn't swing a punch, he threw out his stick. - KGBflyers10
What they both did was wrong. However, only 1 response was physical. I agree it didn't look like much - the Russian barely reacted - but Hartman's response to the taunting was the more egregious offense.
That being said, I understand the frustration. We've probably all been there, losing a game and being angry, especially since it's the 2nd game in a row we've lost. He reacted to a Richard move.
All things being equal, putting them back on the ice together in those last seconds to see how they sort things out would make sense. But I'm guessing it would have turned into a 6v6 Battle Royale. |

See my next post.
EDIT: never mind.
Looks like you chose to ignore my statement on how the American player deserved the retaliation. - KGBflyers10
Relax, Frances. You'll not find one post of mine stating that retaliation isn't warranted. I don't care for that brand of retaliation, that's all. That stuff is for pussies. Can't deal with it now? Deal with it later. Don't embarrass yourself, your team, and your country for crying out loud. |

I suspect Hartman will face a sanction (IIHF?) of some sort. - johndewar
Last seconds, lost game, EN goal for Russia...kid skates by the American bench showboating a bit, last kid on bench slaps the Russian with his stick blade. Didn't look like all that much, but it happened. And drama from there. |

Crazy, huh?
Also, one more note about Team USA: elite, super defenseman Dustin Byfuglien is apparently not one of the top 8 (7 if we account for a pairing preference) best US-born defenseman in the league. Just saying. - jmatchett383
do you really think he is? he wouldnt have sniffed this roster if it was up to me |

So if you can't fight but think a guy on the other team is showing you up in the dying seconds, then run someone hard a high on the other team. As he's laying in a heap on the ice, skate by the guy on the bench and let him know it was all for him. |

No, I do not. But there are a few posters who seem to think he's this superstar defenseman who we should pursue at nearly all costs to acquire. |

Nice, glad you figured out that post was for you. I must still be drunk from New Year's or something.
Yup, at least what you describe would have been a hockey play. I like it.
edit: and johndewar is probably like wtf? I know what happened. And getting his rock, paper, scissors hand ready for battle! |

I wouldn't consider that "standing up" (from what I've heard), I'd consider it cheap. If nothing else, just jump off the ice, grab him, and pound the crap out of him. |

I am not a fan of Buff's at all so this doesn't surprise me.. I find him to be a very 1 dimensional dman. Not only would I not give up assets for him, I wouldn't want him on the Flyers acquired as a UFA.
I also am blown away about how much the Leafs gave Phaneuf and don't expect him to be on Team Canada honestly. |

Not an excuse. A REAL lawyer would be studying law constantly, be hiring attractive females to take notes for him, and somehow screw an old lady out of a substantial amount of money. You should be ashamed of yourself. |

Phaneuf is a 2nd tier (1A if you will) defenseman getting paid like an elite one. But, given the lack of player like him available, I can't really fault them too much. |

The market is such that I guess they had to sign him to that contract. Situation is similar to what we had to pay for Streit. I just think the term and money is nuts. He's not Shea Weber, Drew Doughty or Duncan Keith.
I am glad though because it means he will be sucking for the Leafs for years. |
