I don't think we're trying to figure out ways to get rid of him, just rolling out scenarios. - golfingsince

They could roll with a tandem of Lack / Vokoun or something to that effect. If the opportunity is there to trade him for a substantial return I don't think they'll hesitate. - golfingsince
Substantial return? They couldn't give him away after the lockout ended. Or at the trade deadline, or prior to the draft. Bettman has made certain the Canucks will never get a 'substantial return' by trading Luongo. Gillis and co. came to that conclusion months ago and introduced us all to a young gentleman by the name of Bo Horvat. |

Meh, teams like the Oilers and Islanders and to a lesser extent the Panthers have shown us that they probably should have moved a substantial return for him. I don't really deal in absolutes. |

Long time Canucks fans have their expectations tempered by many years of unbridled futility. And we don't have the CBC and TSN constantly reminding us that our hockey team is the most important thing in the universe. |

Canucks still get hit hard by the penalty even if he gets traded, and why would he play his last 2/3 years making peanuts?. |

Maybe he'll still want that cup and will be a good backup? Maybe he just will want to play still and will get to play where he wants? Like I said, I don't deal in absolutes.
Edit: I'd also like to add that I keep hearing about how recapture is going to cripple us. The cap should be substantially higher then, and why are we going to sacrifice a window now for what might be in 8-9 years from now? |

Mild interest in Hemsky, if the price was low.
Just cause I'd love to see another pure playmaker in the top 6. Although, it's looking like they could also use a sniper now.
If MG does make a trade, though, I'd rather it be for a young player with years remaining, rather than a UFA.
Canucks shouldn't be in the market for a rental.

Too risky, either make an arrangement now with one of the Florida teams(Panthers will be easier since they're usually a cap floor team). Something like the Canucks will deal Luongo to them for his last 3 years and for that favour they'll give up a pick or something. If that's not possible or the Panthers aren't down for it, then buy him out this summer. If TB can afford to buyout Vinny, the Canucks can do the same with Lu.
The recapture penalty risk could potentially screw the Canucks down the road for multiple years. |

I'd hardly call 4.2 million over 3 years crippling if the cap continues to rise. We could even be in a rebuilding situation during that time frame. I think the buy out Luongo at all costs reeks of panic. |

Guess we'll have to agree to disagree on this one. I think people will look back on this(assuming that the Canucks do get hit with a penalty) and curse Gillis/Aquilini for it.
Maybe I'd be more on your side if Luongo's save percentage in the playoffs since his first year here wasn't a mediocre .910%. |

Any interest in Briere with Montreal retaining some salary? Doesn't really seem like a fit in MTL. |

Stats can be played with any way you want. For example, minus Schneider's series against LA he has a career playoff save percentage of .898

Yeah, That's crossed my mind. MTL retaining salary would also be must.
He's been pretty lousy this year, but that playoff reputation always keeps his value up a bit.
Any rental would also have to be a pretty bargain deal, or else I'd rather they just stay status quo and retain the assets, maybe sell if there's a sweetheart deal to be made. |

Right, just kind of weird that you wouldn't use the whole 64 games. Oh right, they improve his stats. |

Fair enough, but he's been a headcase ever since he lost the "saviour" label after his first couple of years here IMO. |

He has been less of a headcase now than ever wouldn't you agree? He's certainly the most polarizing guy in Vancouver sports history. We don't have a solution at goalie moving forward although Lack has played well. Do you really think we should just buy him out with no return because he might retire and cost us 4.2 for three years when the cap might be over $90 million? Maybe even higher?
As I said, it reeks of a panic move. |

If Lu was traded this off season, and retired with 3 years left the penalty would be roughly $3m per season, for three seasons for the Canucks. That's basically one less player available to the Canucks than other 'spend to the cap' teams. |

Yes, at that point a 3rd liner or bottom 3 defender at most. Can be solved by an entry level deal. Don't forget, the cap is to rise significantly by the time Lu retires. |
