Carol Schram: Vancouver Canucks: Playoff Race Tightening, Grading the D With just one point in their last two games, the Vancouver Canucks will be looking to leapfrog the LA Kings with a win on Saturday at Staples Center. Also, December grades for the defense and some thoughts the USA Hockey/embedded journalist debate.

I have to say Carol that when you're logging 30 minutes a night and playing rock solid you probably deserve a better rating than -A.

While Bieksa may be Tort's "gunslinger" and a witty post-game interview, he is someone I wouldn't mind MG packaging to acquire some top 6 scoring depth. I'm not sure if he has a NTC or not, but I would guess the market is fairly good for a quality RH defenseman.

I know he can show up for big games and provide a timely goal now and then, but it just seems that now when he takes chances it costs us more often than not. He tries to make the cute play instead of the safe or right play and gets caught deep in the offensive zone.

What would Bieksa + Gaunce or Jensen bring back?

ps... time to give Kassian a shot with the Sedins. The Hansen experiment is a bust.

Don't worry, Hammond, I'm pretty sure Bieksa has a NMC.

Pittsburgh needs D-men right now. Maybe Bieksa for Crosby, Neal and a 1st?

Canucks would have to include a third rounder and David Booth. He'd be the real key to the deal, a la Dave Gagner.
