I thought Giroux was the best player in the world. - Moose_15
Which clearly explains why they didn't pick him for the Olympics...two best players = 1 rosehill..

So why couldn't coots represent the US if he choose too later on? - Yosimar89
I'm sure he can. IIRC Brett Hull had the same option. |

Would you trade Giroux and Voracek for Crosby and Neal? - PhillySportsGuy
As long as I had a pacifier for Crosby and a trade partner for a #1 D for Neal. Probably. |

Actually, in Nedved's case, an exception is made because there was no Czech Republic when he played for Canada. The fall of communism and his defection from Czechoslovakia meant he couldn't play for that nation, so he used his Canadian citizenship to play for Canada.
After the formation of the Czech Republic, he and others were permitted to reclaim their nation for international play.
However, under IIHF & Olympic rules, a player can only play for one country in their sanctioned events-which means that once a guy plays for a country, that's it. Which is why Couturier is ineligible for the US, despite dual citizenship - Jsaquella
Okay thanks! That clears that up. I totally forgot that it was Czechoslovakia still in 1994. |

I realize that but didn't Jsaquella say that once you play for one country the IIHF does not allow you to play for a different country? - Cable2k
Got me but there have been plenty of Olympic athletes that have competed for more than one country. It isn't hard to find them. I have no idea what influence the IIHF has over hockey rosters if they have any or total. |

I don't think Hull had ever previously played in an I IIHF event. |

Really don't understand Canada's love affair with Roberto Luongo. Remember at the last Olympics how poorly he played? Brodeur had to come in and bail him out. - Pixote Andolini
Other way around my friend did you watch the final?
Roberto Luongo 5 1.75 0.927 5 0 1 308 0 0 0 0
Martin Brodeur 2 2.90 0.867 0 1 0 124 0 0 0 0

Hull had the option, but he chose the US. Once you choose, you're stuck. Couturier played for Canada in the WJC, so he is Canadian. |

The IIHF basically says, for it's sanctioned events, that once you represent a nation that is the nation you're playing for, Period.
Nedved gets the exemption because he defected from the Communist regime. Hull could have chosen Canada, but didn't-and as soon as he played for the US, he no longer had a choice. Ditto for Couturier, playing for Canada in the WJC |

A chance to get the best player in the world who is a proven winner?
I love watching Giroux and Jake play but I will drive them both to Pitts. - opeth_pa
I would trade any two Flyers for Crosby. Take your pick. |

Okay, I gotcha and believe you. I didn't realize the IIHF controlled Olympic hockey to that extent.
