true. i understand you have to give to get. but i would be wary of opening too many holes to fill one. our bottom 6 is atrocious, imagine how it will be without sutter. the PK would suffer immensely as well.

It would have be letang...'the other trade would require moving jussi to third line center and making an additional trade for a winger to play with him

im open to trading any of them in a deal that i think ultimately makes the team better. at the risk of overhyping a perceived flavor of the month, maatta right now holds tremendous value in my eyes. i couldnt see many deals in which it would convince me to move him in a package. i personally still love despres as well, although i can see if others around the league dont hold him up as a pristine prospect. id consider moving him though in a deal if it was right. im probably not as high on pouliott as others, but lately it has definitely been more encouraging. if the team is hell bent on keeping letang, it would likely make sense on gauging his level of value to other teams since the are kind of a redundant player.

I wouldn't call Pouliott and Letang "redundant" when one of them hasn't even played an AHL game yet. Just because they seem like the same type of player, it's totally possible (yet improbable) that Pouliott flames out early in his pro career.

Aha! Got you! Pouliot has played in an AHL game...or two. He played in the AHL playoffs for WBS after his season was over in Portland last year.

Also, he means they're the same type of player. Keeping one makes the other a bit less likely to be an impact guy soon.

it was more aimed at Pouliott being redundant if the team kept letang, than vise versa.

You'd have to make that Maata (and be prepared to sweeten the deal) to get Edmonton to not hang up the phone immediately.

LOL ... Letang gets moved before Maatta.

should the team decide that letang is one the guy to stay, it largely fills that role that Pouliott would be designed to play. in that instance, pouliott's value to the team would likely be greater in a trade than in keeping him around if the situations that he is projected to be suited for are primarily filled by letang.

Oh okay, then yes. If they keep Letang and feel that Pouliott is a potential Letang, then I agree. Sorry. I took it as they were interchangable.

if i had to bet, i would guess that both are going to be part of the defense for the foreseeable future. i still think despres is who ends up going. when, who knows. something eventually has to be done with this logjam on the back end, but they shouldnt feel pressured to rush into moving someone. some guys are still a while off. the free agency decision on orpik will be an interesting one. in my mind, niskanen's bags are already packed

no worries man. im not a huge CHL follower by any means, so im far from the most up to speed on the prospects on here, but from everything ive seen and read pouliott seems designed to fill that whole puck moving role. how well he eventually develops at it obviously remains to be seen. letang, warts and all, is still pretty damn good with the ability to be great. pouliott, even if he pans out, likely wont reach the level of letang at his best. but should letang, at the risk of counting too many chickens, i would like to think that one of either pouliott or despres could eventually absorb that loss.

Anyone on this team not wearing 87/71 can be traded if the right deal comes along. So if Maatta needed to go or Letang and Sutter so be it. Not saying that deal is for Eberle but I'd part with Neal if the price was right.

I think we all assume Despres is valuable to other teams but we have no real way of knowing. Hopefully he is and if he goes it's for a quiality top 6 player.

thats my mindset as well. but the whole "right price thing" is tricky, and admittedly probably renders some guys close to untouchable, even if not in name.

i would like to think so, but like you said we really have no way of knowing. someones only worth what someone else is willing to pay. and right now, due to relatively limited exposure, someone would have to be willing to pay a decent freight based largely on potential.

It will certainly be interesting. Shero hasn't lost many trades so we just have to put our faith in him. I wish the trade deadline was earlier in the season though I hate waiting.

Shea Weber, Seth Jones, and 3 1st round picks for Malkin. Would you do it?

Absolutely agree with this. Not saying I am chomping at the bit to move guys like Maatta or Letang, but if a good deal comes along and we have a chance to improve the forward group by adding someone to the top 6 to push someone to the bottom 6 I would definitely consider it. We have the D in the system to fill those gaps and not handcuff our future.

No I wouldn't. However the Penguins probably would. We are pretty set on D but you could trade Weber to Philly and get Claude, Simmonds and Vorecek

Defense is a very hard position to asses a young players abilities long term, look at Nisky he was someone I wanted out of here in the worst way. Now he is one of the most solid guys we have on D, and the guy plain and simple HITS THE NET. Letang doesn't, and I don't know if that is something that can be taught. If Tanger is ever going to be an elite offensive D-man in this league he has got to start finding the net. If Tanger can put up numbers that his natural talent is capable of doing, it would take a lot to get him out of the Burgh. Will he ever be able to do that? I don't know.

At this moment I would not be devastated to trade Letang, then again 3 years down the road it might be a catastrophic mistake.

Letang currently sits 3 behind the leader of goals scored for defenseman with half the games played. He also has 2 more then Nisky does in half the games. He may not get it on net every shot but when he does it goes in. And he actually has more shots on goal then Nisk.
