The better question would be to name a coach that all the players praised while playing for him who has actually one anything of importance.
Player friendly coaches never get lasting results.
Great Coaches are hated by the players until after they see that the coach got the best out of him.
But there is more to great coaching then just yelling and benching.

Habs should tank and get #1 pick next 3 years. That worked for Oilers. |

Eric. Not sure how you can really say this.
Outside of PK and Price take a good look at that roster....it's pretty mediocre. - stormey

See, I agree with that.
He's ok, and he's coaching a mediocre team.
That doesn't sound like a cup winning strategy to me.

So the exact some skills that the team has been labeled with for the last 30 years.
Nice, how has that been working out? - 2gals1dane
Yes and no. I'm not sure how many people would cite speed, skill, and possession as the strengths of any Habs team from 1998-2003, when guys like Savage, Zednik and Petrov were leading our team in scoring with 45 points.
But since the lockout, you're absolutely correct. Rightly or wrongly, every Habs GM since 2005 has strived to construct a lineup that values speed and skill over size and grit. Paradoxically, however, the team has tended to employ coaches (with the exception of Carbo) who value defense over offense.
All of that to say, I'm not really sure what your point of view is. Are you suggesting that the Habs would be better off playing MT & JM's defense-centric style of hockey? Because if so, that would call for a drastic change in personnel. Or would the team be better served finding a coach whose philosophy matches the skill-set of the kind of players that management regime after management regime seems so intent on icing?
Or do you even put this much thought into your argument at all? |

to me that's what separates assistant and head coaches. guys like Tom Renney are better served as the player's buddy. that said i don't know if it's that cut and dried. i think if the players have legit respect for their head coach he can afford to let his guard down every now and again. as long as they respond to the criticism. |

Speed, skill, and puck possession come to mind. At least to mind. But then, what do I know? I'm just a pot smoking bourgeois hipster who spends his time fraternizing with you dicks. - razr
I agree with you 100%.
If a team can at times play great, and at times not so great.

The definition of a mediocre team right there
They need hot streaks to look good, otherwise it is a win one lose one depending on the competition |

so then it's safe to say that even with great goaltending, they're a .500 team. actually, sub .500 when you factor in OT/SO loss. - DoubleDown

Not necessarily, if they are capable of playing great, they should be prepared and motivated to play great.
These Habs are capable, they're just not being motivated, or prepared, we've seen it.

Or maybe one game they get the bounces and one game they don't.
The habs are exactly like the Leafs. Mediocre. |

Other then PK, Gallagher and Pacioretty does this team have any actual "speedy" Players, or is it the transition game when everything is clicking that makes it look like the team has speed? |

Do you think the Hawks need a pep talk before every game to get them motivated?
Even when they were on their Streak, they were not that good, and their competition was not that great either. They got lucky against a couple of good teams and beat some poopty ones. |

Times have changed...the athletes have changed too...they don't respond to that...you can threaten them like they use to. Also, Bowman changed his style quite a bit as the players psyche changed...
It's not much different than the way we were taught in school and the way our kids are being taught in school today (or if you're too young, how you vs your parents).
