It's times like these where I really, really wish I'd played competitive hockey at some point...

I have only the vaguest sense (inspiration, x's and o's) of what a head coach is supposed to do at any level... I would assume that with NHL-level players, it's usually less a matter of motivation and more about maintaining morale and discipline?

I imagine hockey players at that level are usually pretty motivated, but when they are selfish, confused, disorganized, or lacking confidence I imagine that would take a pretty big toll... All of which I'm seeing from various Leafs these past few games.

I look at the Pat Burns model for how you coach a team in Toronto.

He had every guy's back, and you need that in TO. But he was also incredibly intense. You listen to a guy like that. He's your biggest supporter through thick and thin, but he's the type of guy who commanded respect.

Too many "player's coaches" become doormats. Too many dictators get tuned out by their players.

I give Patrick Roy credit for figuring out that fine balance one game into his career.
