Wow. OK.

The Flyers are currently cap compliant at $64.3 million, with Pronger's LTIR. Everybody knows this.

Downie, Hall, Emery, Timonen and Meszaros are UFA.

Baby Schenn and Mason are RFA. Giroux's contract escalates.

You're saying that the Flyers aren't going to have a full roster with two new defensemen on it? With the cap going up by $7 million?

It's borderline mathematically impossible, especially with Pronger's LTIR and the summer overage.

There's plenty of ways to do this -- not every defenseman they target has to be a $6 million player -- and they'll have to do it, because of free agency and Timonen and Mez's likely departures.

They have the money to do whatever they want.

- AllInForFlyers

You need to spend some time on capgeek with the GM tool because you don't understand how it works. The summer overage won't help the Flyers fit two free agent defenseman and Pronger under the cap at the end of camp when they have to be cap compliant. There's no one to waive or send down who would open up any meaningful room.

Guys like Boyle, Markov and Giradi will get at least 5.5m and the lesser talents will start around 4m. No good FA will wait around till after camp to sign with the Flyers once they can put Pronger on LTIR. Not even a washed up vet like Cleary would do that.

I don't know why you feel I don't go to CapGeek, but OK.

The Flyers have used the summer overage numerous times -- they just did it last year, when they signed Lecavalier.

You don't have to be cap compliant until the first day of the season. Since we don't know who's coming in, how can you say "the summer overage won't help."

We don't even know who's coming!

I honestly don't understand why you're irritated with me saying that the Flyers are going to have two new defensemen -- Gill/Timonen/Meszaros are all UFA. The only one who wouldn't shock the world with a return is Timonen...but at 39 years old, it would be surprising.

Then try making a cap compliant roster with two FA defenseman along with Coburn, Streit, Grossmann, LSchenn and Pronger.

But...if Timonen and Meszaros and Gill all retire/leave, we will have to...right? They'll make it fit -- they'll have to.

I can't project who!

No, they don't have to. Normal teams fill out their D with cheap prospects like Gus and Alt. Like I said one good FA defenseman will soak up all their cap space unless they trade someone or don't resign Mason.

It's worth noting that some of that summer cap space has to go to BSchenn, Mason (or his replacement), a backup goalie, Downie (or a replacement third line winger), and probably another fourth line player.

Probably already been covered, but Capgeek's armchair GM projects the Flyers having $16.75m in cap space with nine forwards (including Rinaldo and rosehill) and five defensemen under contract.

I don't think it's that dire, but I guess we'll see. There's a lot of things that will happen before camp next year -- we can certainly agree on that.

The one thing that's going to have to be fixed is where Lecavalier goes -- if Raffl's in the Top 9, then even without Downie, you have:

Raffl-Giroux-Voracek, all signed
Hartnell-Schenn-Simmonds -- Schenn RFA
Read-Couturier-Lecavalier -- all signed

There might not even be room for Downie, if nobody gets moved for a defenseman.

Hell, if the Flyers play hardball with Raffl, they don't have to give him a penny more than the 10 percent raise due for his qualifying offer.

Raffl is also in the re-sign line, RFA. No doubt, the Flyers have some cash to play with, but I don't think they can sign two big free agent defensemen. Not comfortably, anyways.

I wouldn't expect a big raise for Raffl. I have been wrong before, tho.

I counted Raffl as signed, only because he can be qualified -- he doesn't have arbitration rights. That contract isn't going to be painful, if he wants to stay in North America.

Hellz yeah it was, but if you really want to be entertained go see Lone Survivor. What a amazing film that really moves you, no hollywood hero cheeziness whatsoever. I cant remember the last movie i seen that the whole audience stood up and clapped for a solid five minutes after it ended.

Five minutes? They didn't get bored? Their hands didn't get tired? That's an awful long time to spend clapping.

They just looked flat out tired this weekend. It's great that they can now come from behind and wins games vs packing it in like they did at the beginning of the season. Problem is if they are chasing the game every game it will catch up to them and it did this weekend.

I hate to admit this, but I'm having a hard time getting excited about this team. I'm still watching and all in on the Flyers, I don't care about any other team, but for me this team just doesn't have "it". I find myself not getting as worked up to watch games or even really to get tickets and drive that hour to see them. Part of it is I just can't figure out who or what this team is all about.

I think they'll be hoping for some young guys to come up and make some sort of impact. Not expecting them to be top 6 or top 4 guys but guys like Laughton, Leier, Cousins, Lauridson and Alt should push for jobs. Guys like McGinn and Gus should be able to crack the starting lineup or I'd say there time here may come to an end.

I'd agree if these two can't make an impact on the Flyers it's time for them to move on. I think Gus should be able to do that this year. I like McGinn I don't think he is the answer, but he does go into the dirty areas. I think we will find out over the time Rinaldo is out if McGinn has a future as a Flyer or not.

McGinn reminds me a little of the big version of Akeson. He's decent in the top 6 as a net front presence, but he doesn't really have a spot on the checking line and he's not playing with enough skill to be effective on the 4th line. I would still rather have him than Rosehill, VDV or Rinaldo.

That's definitely true about this year's Rinaldo. Last year he was a menace and drew a lot of penalties. He was a good forechecker and rarely hurt the team. This year he's lost his mind.

I was looking forward to Rinaldo taking another step forward this season, but man has he really not done that. I like guys like him, even liked Carcillo, but when you start to hurt the team sorry there are others that want that spot.
