I think they would be better served if they traded Malkin to Edmonton for like Hall and Gagner.

Here was my trade:

Malkin
-for-
Huberdeau
Markstrom
Trochek
2013 1st and 2nd

Yes, it's a massive overpayment. But here's the thing: Malkin is not only a hockey player. He's a name. He's a billboard. He's a cardboard cutout at the liquor store. There's a team that has been around for 2 decades as of now and has zero fan base. Malkin is a guy you can build that fan base around.

In return, the Penguins get a top-line winger, a top young goalie, a good young center, and 2 nice picks.

the only reason i still say no to that is because the pens time to win cups is now.

I know how it sounds, but I just meant that at least he understood that he was going to take a beating, and took it. He didn't hide and turtle.

Either he doesn't want to play 4th line, or no team in the league wants him on their team.
- Feanor

His prestige as a player is probably working against him... it's the same thing that's happening to Vinny now. It's one thing to tell a kid or a less-heralded player to accept a lesser role, play out of position, and/or completely change his game to suit team needs. It's a whole other thing to approach guys like Gags or Vinny, who were once faces of franchises, and are pretty set in their ways, to swallow their pride and play a bit part. Nobody wants a potentially disgruntled vet or a possible PR disaster on their hands.

I know. I just think that, with Crosby, Malkin's a luxury, not a need. If Pascal Dupuis can be a top scorer with Crosby, Huberdeau becomes a 40-goal scorer from day 1. Markstrom becomes your backup. You get your choice of anyone from the draft last year besides MacKinnon. Those are guys that can contribute now.

oh yeah. OV is a god damn freight train. the fact that he can hit like weber, and score like he does. he is a physical marvel. but to me, that one highlight play a game he has the potential to make each game doesnt outweigh the ones crosby contributes when you also consider the dozens of little small things crosby does each game that contribute to his teams success in ways that OV doesnt.
- stayinthefnnet

But this all harps back to is Crosby going to be healthy. If Crosby is healthy, you guys might have 3 cups by now. That is why I take Ovechkin or Stamkos.... Actually Stamkos likely because of his age and abilities. No matter what player you take you still have to build the RIGHT team around that player.... Even Crosby... Because if you dont have Malkin on that team, then for all those games that Corsby is hurt, the Penguins dont do anything.

yah If I was a pens fan i wouldnt want that either. The time for the pens t owin is now. Their window is closing, if it hasnt closed already. They have a powerful offense but that doesnt get you anywhere in the playoffs. They need to sell off some d talent and get some bottom six players to even out there roster. Like the talbots and other grinders with talent.

He's missed 1 playoff due to injury his entire career. The fact that they don't win isn't because of him, it's because of the shooter tutor in the net and the lack of depth past the second line.

1, that I can recall. And he put up 8 points in 6 games, which is basically his career average.

Ott's gonna be the most sought-after 3rd liner since Paul Gaustad. If he gets a 1st round pick, Buffalo's gonna have seemingly every 1st round pick this year.

I think, next year, instead of icing players, they'll just like their draft positions on their official roster.

1st line: 2014 1st round pick, 2014 1st round Islanders pick, Grigorenko

I know its been more then 1. Regardless, it all goes back to how each person builds a team. I would play it safe, building around a superstar that I know is going to be healthy. I'm going to pair him up with another forward that can dish him the puck and defend.

Only they picked the wrong year to do it. Should have done it last year, where there are players going 9th overall that could be superstars....

Which ones then? He was injured on the tail end of 11/12. All of his other injuries have been early or mid season.

I'm not saying your pick is wrong, but I question your reasons for NOT picking Crosby is all.

It's like taking Yzerman over Lemeiux because Lemieux missed so much time, and that makes no sense to me.

to me though, that first initial superstar guy shouldnt be reliant upon somebody else for his success. he should be the one leading others to it.

which blows my mind on how the same people that will claim kunitz is a useless plug will also say that crosby is overrated. not saying anyone on here, but that just shows the logic that makes me hate flyers fans. youd think simple math would dictate that it cannot be both ways

After the first 5 or so picks of most drafts (the "sure things"), there's always a reshuffling of the deck down the road. Even now, Anthony Mantha would probably be a top 10 pick as of now. Hartman would move up as well.

But yes, 100% no doubt possible that Nichuskin is the best 10th overall + pick of all time ever.

I don't think anyone will say Kunitz is a useless plug. I think he's a good supporting player who just happens to have great chemistry with the best player in the world, and has taken full advantage of it.

To be fair, the whole Olympic selection episode shows that perspective on Kunitz/the Pens/whatevs isn't Flyers fan exclusive.

Man, I just looked at the list of 10th overall picks. What a pick of death. The last player who I'd consider an impact player taken 10th was Bobby Holik (89), and the last superstar was Selanne (88). Other than that, Jocelyn Thibault was the best (RIP Bourdon).

and thats totally fine if you feel that way, because you are conceding that the majority of his statistics come from playing with the best player out there.

what gets me is the well kunitz sucks, its only because of the team he plays on. followed by a crosby is overrated. i dont see how someone can generate that logical progression and not be in some sort of home

that is true as well. i do interact the most with flyers fans in the day to day though, so they largely make up the coloring of my experiences.
