i doubt we move to giroux on the wing unless we experiment with him and vinny together on the first line otherwise vinny would have to go to the 4th line
- 2Real

Maybe we just blow up the 4th line and make it a scoring line.

I know this won't happen, because Homers gonna Homer, but I'd prefer it if they eschewed UFA altogether... Bryzgalov, Streit, Vinny, almost Cleary, Shelley.... Briere.

It's been a while since the Flyers plucked a gem in UFA. Jagr was a good one. Talbot was as well. Not much other than those two though.

Raffl is looking like the next candidate to potentially fill this role. He's been great so far.

There's generally something 'wrong' with any player that makes it to UFA these days... be it age, decline, injury history, limited sample as a good player, exile in the KHL, wanting too much $, etc. It's really tough to sift the good values from the bad... at least until August when the asking prices plummet.

If Poile came and offered MDZ for Coburn (assuming a bit of $ retained), would anybody here do it?

Due solely to age, yes. But with Coburn, you get (for the most part) a consistent game. MDZ will always leave your mouth open, but it will be out of amazement or horror each night.

The immediate tradeoff on the defensive side of the puck would be terrifying -- relying even more heavily on Grossmann and Schenn at ES and PK?

Long-term, who knows. Would be a roll of the dice, but maybe not on the level of JvR for Schenn.

That's a frightening question. Coburn mostly be default is the Flyers best D-man, and there would have to be strong consideration trading him for a guy the Rags just gave away.

Nfw

Unless they are tanking on purpose because they would be a lottery team for sure if they made that trade

Random poll of the day:

Who did you prefer:
early-years Therien (94-99)
Flyers' era McGillis (97-03)

McGillis put up more points, but was braindead when playing the puck (not the man) defensively. Therien was a more steady player, was a great compliment to Desjardins, and was the best player at shutting Jagr down in the league.

I get the hate people have for Schenn but there was no way he or any other dman had a shot on that play. he is stationary at the blue line when a bad pass comes back his way between his feet bouncing. Gerbe, who is already a fast player, is skating forward with all his speed while Schenn is stationary facing the play. I'm sorry but that could have been Coburn and the results would have been the same.

Therien, my bad.

Similar bodies, similar play, similar hate.

McGillis was ok, he wasn't asked to play the most minutes as a #1 in all situations

I think Therien's style compares a little more to Brad Marsh, McGillis had more offensive ability

I don't know, I couldn't say, each one was ok as a support player, each had their own strengths & weaknesses.

I wouldn't mind having one or both in their prime now

Luke Richardson was a player with no mobility, no offensive skills, but was really mean & nasty around the net, I guess thats what Homer thought he was getting when he acquired Luke Schenn.
