Both were lottery picks -- they'd better be studs.
- Tomahawk

But they arent studs yet, and you couldnt count on them going into the season after what we saw last year. Lecavalier was a good signing. If Schenn didnt progress, then Lecavalier was the safety net. Also, they might be thinking that they will be mving one of these guys soon for a defenseman... so its nice to already have a piece in place.

Top pairing is possible for both guys. No-one said number 1 guys.
- youarewrong

Morin has a chance to be a shutdown guy. I don't see him being a legitimate top pairing guy unless he's paired with a true number 1.

He and Coburn would look good together as a shutdown pairing. Two big guys who can skate. I imagine that wouldn't be fun to play against.

Ghost isn't big enough to handle the big minutes of a top pairing dman. He will need to be put more in favorable situations.

You and Yakupov. You love him!

I'm not saying on the cheap. Say Miller is worth $7.5 over 4 years and you can get him for $7M over 4 years? Would you rather get him or use that money to get Girardi or a #4 defenseman and top 9 winger.

I think he becomes an NHL player... the question is... will he be a good one. The safe bet is a 4th liner, maybe like a Aaron Carter or whatever his name is.

Maybe it's been a revelation for you, but I never lost faith in them.

Schenn's at about the same scoring pace as last season, so not sure where this idea that he was bad last year came from. Cooter was doing everything well except for getting on the scoresheet.

When you have top young players, you have to play them to death so they can learn and get better.

Not bring in a "marquee" guy to soak up PP time and push the kids out of position and become a cap impediment down the road when the kids have finally blossomed and you can't bring in that Ron Francis type of move b/c you already invested in Vinny Lecavalier before you needed him.

I agree. I was willing to allow Schenn and Couturier an entire season to determine whether center was a long term position. These guys were very high picks. They performed well at every level leading up to the NHL. It's not like Schenn was tearing it up at wing.

Yeah, just look at Ryan Johansen... it took a couple of seasons for him to get his game together, they finally stopped pushing him over to the wing, and he's broken out in a big way.

Most kids are not going to come into the league ready to dominate... it's just really messed up that most fans are seemingly eager to pull the plug on them if they don't.

Things have actually changed a bit. Geeks no longer stay inside and read all the time. Geeks spend their lives on the computer playing games that provide no educational purpose at all. In my graduating class, the smartest kids were also the more popular crowd.

I know. Everyone expects guys to come in and dominate like a crosby or malkin with no ups and downs.

I agree with you. A lot of people said we should have dumped Couturier and Schenn by now but I slam my head into the desk whenever someone mentions it

In hindsight, Lecavalier has been a bad move. It's not that I didn't expect Schenn or Couturier to take a next step, I expected Schenn to thrive at wing, with less two way demand. But he's played very well at center, which means that Lecavalier is pushing to a spot he didn't play as well at.

It's just a bad fit now, unless Schenn can shift to wing or Lecavalier can.

Lecavalier was doing well, until he got his face busted.

Here's my wacky GM suggestion-rumor mongers say Detroit is shopping Bertuzzi. They were interested in Lecavalier this summer, perhaps they agreed to Vinny & Gustafsson for Bertuzzi, Eaves & Quincey.

Eaves was waived, and Quincey has struggled. You're not gonna get a kid like Gardiner for Vinny, but maybe just moving the deal is enough

Think they'd get more from other teams. The Ducks have an extra first rounder to use as bait.

I thought Vinny and Schenn were a good combo early this season before he hurt his back. I still think Schenn can be become the LW we need, and fill in at center when required. Like Sharp has done.

You have to understand that moving Vinny isn't going to bring back anything. You will need to package something with him like the Gagne deal. Just be sure you don't take Matt Walker back.

"There is also no question that the Flyers could really, really use a strong two-way defenseman with high-end mobility and puck-moving skills to play about 22 minutes a game. Unfortunately, there's no one they can call up who fit all those criteria nor are other teams eager to trade such defensemen."

Sharp's game is more conducive to the wing. He can skate and really shoot.

I just think Schenn's best attribute is his offensive awareness. He seems to find the right spots. Most of his goals come from being in the right spot.

I still think it's too quick to give up on Vinny; he's not the 52-goal guy he once was, but we knew that going in.

There's still 30 games left to go in the season. We don't know if Baby Schenn's going to go into one of those patented 15-game scoreless streaks he has had before.

Do I want to believe Baby Schenn is the answer? Sure, I do. But if we're truly being patient, wouldn't it be best to let the rest of the season play out, see who does what, see if we make the playoffs?

I am trying not to be too up or too down on guys...it's a long season, and Vinny had a broken back, in-season. I don't know that he can't perform like he did the first month of the season again -- personally, I think he's young enough that giving up on him might be a bit premature.

At this point, the team could just use a defenseman with more than one positive attribute. Grossmann, Schenn, Streit and Mez are very one dimensional.
