I'm not a big stats guy, but similar style and similar player types are two different things. Callahan hasn't put up much in the way of stats at all during his career, unlike the other guys you're talking about. So I guess I'm interested to know what your definition of " very similar molds" is?! They look alike? Because even if they play alike, pretty large difference in career stats... - MnGump
they play similar styles. they all put 110% into every shift and never stop moving, they backcheck as fast as they can, they hit everything in site, they go to the dirty areas to score goals, they're hard to play against, etc.
you watch parise a lot so you know that the type of player i'm talking about; the player that just puts his heart and soul on his sleeve literally every single shift and literally every single time.
a guy like backes is similar imo too.
backes, parise, brown, and callahan are all US olympians (coincidence?) as well, and the majority of them will carry A's and C's on their jerseys.
also, cally isn't as injury prone as people make him out to be. he's only missed significant time to injury 1 time in the last 5 years which was when he blocked a chara slapshot with 1 minute left in the game and broke his leg while still finishing his shift. he also has some pretty sweet hands:

Agreed, Cally isn't in the same league as Parise IMO - sbroads24
you seriously don't see how cally and parise are often compared in play style? parise plays just like cally only has the hands and shot to score 50 goals a year. cally isn't as skilled or talented as parise...not even close...but they play a similar all-out effort game. |
|

i remembered when the devils tried that with parise. didn't turn out to well. |

anyone who thinks parise and callahan play the same type of game must be playing nhl 14 too much. being defensively responsible (i.e backchecking) is like the only thing they have in common. callahan agitates, hits like a beast, etc. contenders would die to have him on their team in the playoffs. parise is a stud two way player that is counted on for offense more than anything else.
easiest explanation:
if it's game 7, and your team is down a goal, you put parise on the ice. if you are up a goal, you put callahan.
stop pretending they are the same player, they are not. |

Parise is a very poor man's Callahan. Let's compare:
GLUE FACTOR:
Callahan: 182%
Parise: 0.
SPIRITUAL LEADERSHIP:
Callahan: 13/10
Parise: 0.
Fill in the blank: __________ IS the NY Rangers (Answer: Callahan).
Conclusion: Callahan is the sh!t and everybody else blows. Sather should overpay him handsomely and if he doesn't he's insane. |

Rangers are in a tough spot. Can't trade calli mid-season. He doesn't light up the scoreboard, but if they expect to find themselves in any sort of deep playoff run, they don't have enough toughness as it is... so they can't trade away a grinder who happens to be their captain, by the way. I like the way they're playing lately, but i'm still not convinced guys like Zuccarello, Hagelin, and Pouliot are capable of taking it to teams like Boston and Pittsburg. Calli at least provides balance, which is essential. That being said, I don't give him 6 or 7 years either. If Sather really thinks they can make a run, he has to keep him. If you lose him after the season in order to avoid crippling the balance sheet going forward, so be it. however, it all changes if some team surprises us and offers something irresistible. This all feels more like a negotiating ploy.. his agents are coming in way too high, so tell the press he's being shopped, see if they budge.. Same tactic Sather used with Stepan (sort of), go to the media.. |

Calling it now...
Callahan for Yakupov - Aetherial
That's the stupidest sh*t I've read today. Ya first overall pick and projected to score 50 goals a season one day for a 30 year old grinder free agent who's a 40 poin guy. Sure he's a beaut ..but don't be stupid. Get real |

because he is a bandwagon rangers fan that doesn't know much about hockey. he thinks because he pays money for tickets to watch games it means he knows the team inside out. LOL @ callahan not being an agitator. what a fail! |

I remember the same argument for Gomez and Briere.
25 is the peak offensive age for the average NHL player. Even players like Datsyuk see a drop in their numbers north of 30.
Callahan is a small guy who plays a physical game and has never played a full season. He already has to bring a lot of intangibles to offset lower offensive production. Those numbers are going to drop and he isn't likely to get less injured.
Callahan is going to want 7 yrs and is a likely candidate to be a huge overpay for the final 3-4.

if you can show me 1 video of callahan ever agitating and then getting into a fight, i'll eat my words and never post on this site again.
when somebody says agitator, i don't know about you but i think of a guy like cooke, avery, marchand, matt martin, etc....not cally.
bottom line is cally is a US olympian JUST LIKE parise, backes, and brown. and they're all part of US's "leadership group". they've all been captains or are currently captains of NHL teams. all players play all-out every single shift and lead by example. obviously parise is tiers ahead of callahan offensively (and trust me, i've watched parise the entire 7 years he was a member of a devils being in the same hockey market...you've probably only watched parise on national tv a handful of times)...it's really not even close. parise is one of the best goal scorers in the league today and callahan is a 3rd liner on most contenders. but they still play a similar style, and if you can't see that, then you don't watch hockey enough to understand the "intangibles and leadership" part of hockey. they're both defensively responsible, finish every hit, block shots, backcheck as hard as they can, put all their effort into every shift, and are willing to block a shot with their face even if their team is up 5 goals with a minute left.
but seriously, show me ONE scenario where callahan has ever pulled a matt cooke/sean avery/scott hartnell and i will virtually suck your d!ck. |

what's he asking for as far as salary/term goes?
it's gotta be a crazy # for NYR to consider moving their captain
