This has been the justification for literally every horrible contract since the cap was put in place. poopty contracts have and will always matter.

197 forwards played 4000+ minutes at even-strength from 2007-2013. These, I would say, are regulars.

Ryan Callahan's points/60: 1.44. That's 163rd, behind Chris Kelly and Marcel Goc.

When you're shelling out that sort of money, generally you want an impact player. The way NHL GMs overpay for guys with high Sh% and not much else, you can find a Ryan Callahan -- decent top-six forward, penalty killer -- for about one third of the cost pretty easily.

And if you want something more predictive than points/goals/whatever, his on-ice shot attempts over that same span are a dead-even 50%.

He's not an impact player.

Agreed, Its why the compliance buyouts were put in place. So the GM's an owners could shed themselves of July 1 mistakes without penalty.

Rangers could then turn around and trade Girardi and would be making out like bandits.

this current year has been a cap struggle....starting next season, 5 million for a player is just a drop in the bucket.
callahan is a mid tier player, just like clarkson.....and will get paid the same...cause he is a 'character guy'.
a plug at 5-6 million a year is ridiculous, absolutely...but who really cares?

Has Eklund ever heard the term "negotiation tactic". By the way, there's a difference between actively shopping a guy and listening to offeres. He's going to be a UFA unless he comes down off his ridiculous demands, so why not throw it out there that you'll listen to offers, and hell, if something blows you away, pull the trigger. It's not like Callahan is irreplaceable, sure he's a heart and soul guy, but he can't stay healthy, tends to get seriously hurt right around playoff time and is 29 years old which in this new NHL is almost past your prime for a guy his size with his game. Ek's column makes it sound like there is no sound reasoning to even entertaining the idea of moving him. Simply not true...

Funny you say this.

Over the same timespan that Callahan averaged 1.44 points/60 at EV, Clarkson averaged ... 1.41.

Oilers would have to offer WAY more than just Yakupov. Yakupov is talented and young. Big deal. Callahan is a heart and soul glue kind of guy. You're clueless if you think a first overall pick is all it will take to get Callahan.
- hankthetank

It's not what you think it's worth it's what someone else offers.
Because your team over pays doesn't mean another will.bickell and hanzus for Callahan

Glen Sather is the grass is always greener on the other side of the fence GM.

He always thinks bringing in outside players are going to bring his team to the next level and can never see value in a player who's already on his team. He seriously builds his teams like a kid playing NHL 2014.

Thankfully these days Mr. Alberts is nothing more than a pressbox popcorn eater.

I still remember that Chicago playoff series when the Canucks blueline was destroyed and Alberts was a top 4 d-man and Salo was playing with busted balls...no wonder Luongo got lit up.

$6Million is ridiculous for that type of player.

That's like me saying Steve Ott is worth 6 Mil. They both have similar points thus far(about 20) and both are considered players that embody the "heart" of their team i.e stick up for teamates, never quit....etc.

Granted Ott has played more games this year so I'll give Callahan a slight edge to put his worth between 4-5million.

Ott currently makes $2.95M per.

He's a leader and a great guy to have on your team. Guy's worth every penny. I know he's had a history of injuries, regardless of that. I think any team would except this guy with open arms.

Also why, when the next CBA is done in 10 years or whatever, there will be a 3rd round of compliance buyouts. Never forget that the main purpose of the cap is to put a limit on owner idiocy (and I say that as someone who likes the cap).

See, compliance buyouts are a perfect example of what I'm saying, I guarantee for every single one of them you had a bunch of people go "well it's a lot of money but it won't matter when the cap hits x"
