its cool. i just got an email alert saying that campus is closing at three. im in awe of their bountiful wisdom and generosity. its irrelevant that the snow will be stopped and largely cleared away by then, but who cares about rationality. - stayinthefnnet
Temple may be the most Bureaucratic school on earth. They probably planned to close late last night, but had to go through 3 million chains of command. |

Dallas had some good defensive lineups while Grossmann was in Dallas. And Grossmann was not mainly a bottom pair defenseman in Dallas. He was in the top 4 in icetime among defenseman for about half the time he was in Dallas. |

oh yeah. absolutely brutal. coming from my undergrad, the difference couldnt have been more of a shock. im only this genuinely pissed because of the one meeting/workshop i missed. even if i wouldve got down there, i wasnt getting stuck in that post apocalyptic poop show like last time when the entire city just lets out at once and people act as though its zombies meets the red scare all in one. |

in that playoff series abomination between the pens and flyers, i thought grossman was probably the only one on either team concerned with defense. i remember at least a couple times he stymied malkin either crashing to the net or tying him up for a putback. so maybe im a little biased in evaluation, but i really dont think hes a problem for you guys. he becomes problematic when asked to do things he cant, but in his role i always thought he was fine. |

Wait, you're going to dismiss people and demand data from them when your entire argument has been "I watched all the video" and "I don't agree with advanced stats because I feel they're unreliable"?
Holy Strawman - Jsaquella
I haven't dismissed anyone personally. What I have done is made an effective argument that refutes some of the criticism that I think is unfair and unwarranted against Grossmann. And I've also made a case for why advanced stats are misused and lack context in a lot of cases, especially when it comes to a player liek Grossmann. And the thoughts that I have offered on that, have been backed up by Bill on this and the other thread.
Now I'm reading that the only reason Grossmann has so many blocked shots in because he screws up so much, and he's blocking the shot of the player that is his check. That is pure hyperbole in my opinion.

It doesn't take that long to watch the goal highlights. Plus I had some free time lately that was available.

see, hate to just be a whining 20 something here, but its just a strained comparison between actual jobs and schooling. i do sympathize with individuals with younger kids, as that surely creates a hassle. but a job, in which you are being paid to do, and likely has repercussions at least somewhat through society, should have a greater standard of striving to be there than an educational field, in which it offers no direct tangible benefits or need fulfillment to society, that essentially operates in a self sustaining and self directing bubble that could disperse and allocate missed time in a way that is impossible to translate to the real world. - stayinthefnnet
1. College should be getting you ready for repercussions, and it looks like they are.
2. You pay for the knolwdge you are getting, thus should want to get every piece of knowledge for the money you spent.
3. Unlike Highschool and Grade school, some people that go to college work, thus making up time is not as easy, thus reluctance to cancel.
4. Your getting 2-4 inches... Try going to University of Minnesota... Think they have students over 2-4 inches? |

Here is something you cant argue against...
Nicklas "The Chosen One" Grossmann is Sloth from the Goonies. (now I know people may easily confuse him with the other, slower mammalian creature that goes by Sloth, but thats not what I was going for)

No, you don't have to look at each play. Over a season external factors balance out.
I don't need to watch every goal Ovechkin has scored this year to know he's a better goal scorer than Bobby Ryan. The numbers speak for themselves. - Feanor
I disagree completely that external factors balance out. That is the fallacy of advanced stats. If a defenseman is outmanned in the defensive zone, with no puck support. And with no real options but to try and rim the puck out along the glass, and it goes for an icing. Is completely different then a situation where a defenseman has control of the puck, has time and space, and makes an errant pass that goes for an icing. One play is a defenseman taking all that is available to him to eliminate pressure and get the puck out of danger. And the other is a defenseman making an unforced and unneccessary error. Both plays should be judged differently.
Clearly it's not a black and white situation as looking at one player has scored 35 and the other has scored 25 goals, so one is a better goal scorer then the other. |

Thats true. Although my friend just graduated Temple Law and works for the DAs office. He says it sucks because he has to argue cases like fining poor kids for smoking weed. Irony being that my friend was a dealer in high school.
My cousins works for the DA in Boston. She says she spends half her day explaining the difference between criminal law and civil law. People don't seem to understand why the city can't sue your neighbor for $10,000 because his dog bit you. |

It's less about the amount of snow and more about the ability to clear it. Minnesota is more equipped to handle more snow. |

Simply based on icetime for when Grossmann was in Dallas. The analogy doesn't make a lot of sense. |

The last part was a mischaracterization of what was said, but who cares at this point.
Your case against analytics and your "effective" argument that refutes the criticism against Grossmann is no more than opinion and provides no data. It's just a challenge of the numbers without addressing what those numbers tell us. That's not an effective argument, it's a strawman.
Your demand for data is laughable because you provide zero data, yet demand it from others. My issue is that you demand a higher standard of proof than you are willing to offer and then use opinion to attack data provided by others. It's nonsense and arguing for the sake of an argument. It's kind of sad I fell into this time. |

1. to an extent, this is the one point i will concede on. but still, then this condemns literally 99.9 percent of the other institutions as failures at their ultimate job.
2. i realize i am paying for it. (likely one of the only ones at the law school doing such). but youre also misinterpreting my argument. i dont want time off from school. far from it. i need to know this, and time out of the classroom is a detriment. i just dont want to have to pull my car out of the snow 4 times to get there to do it. so do what the norm is for schools, cancel it for safety/travel reasons and make it up at a later date.
3. A. the law school has strict regulations on working, with it being flat out banned for a large number of the students. and even for the college as a whole, the number of full time day students working is relatively low. in fact, the evening classes (which would likely house more working students, no?) have already been canceled. so that one doesnt hold up to me.
and 4. by this logic, see atlanta georgia, and their subsequent response to even less. its all relative. |
