Some GM will love Callahan and his leadership. They will pay him $6M over 6 years I bet. |

I've followed all 28 pages today. I feel fortunate that my brain hasn't exploded
And I say that in the regard that, as someone who believes Nicklas Grossmann has not played well, it is pretty much beyond my comprehension how the Flyers could currently be out of a playoff spot, after missing the playoffs last year, with metrics across the board that scream average, and yet, one guy with sincere limitations is afforded the mantle of "it's not him, it's everybody else."
It is beyond my comprehension how Nicklas Grossmann has ascended to a state where if he's on the ice and a goal is scored, the forwards didn't backcheck or his defensive partner hung him out to dry or he had bad puck luck or he was put in a position to fail
You'd think that Grossmann wasn't traded from Dallas because they found him expendable. Instead, the Stars simply bestowed the missing piece upon the Flyers out of the goodness of their hearts - AllInForFlyers
A few points in rebuttal. The debate is not whether Grossmann has played perfect mistake free Hockey this Season, or whether he deserves zero criticism. Nor that "it's not him, it's everybody else" But I notice that everyone else, meaning the other players are trying to be removed from the equation. Defensive play is a team game. Not an individual player game. Are the Flyers an average team just because they have Grossmann on defense? And that the only reason the Flyers are currently out of a playoff spot is because of Nick Grossmann?
And players are traded for various reasons. Doesn't mean the player is not a good player. Nor does it support that Grossmann has had a poor Season.

I don't run to advanced stats but they are valid to support things with players & a teams play.
So much so teams employee people to help them as a team & to determine who the re-sign, sign, & even draft.
To go a step further junior teams are even using them to determine who they draft from minor midget programs into their respective leagues. Like it or not they are here to stay so either you understand them or you continue to go against the grain of what the rest of the sport is moving towards if not at that point already.

The sad thing is he'll get it from somebody. - Jsaquella
Man, as long as he doesn't get it from the Flyers, that guy can go anywhere he wants.
If he gets more than four (which he will) at $4.75 (which he will)...that franchise will live to regret that.
If the Flyers somehow come up with term and years for Callahan, after ridding themselves of Meszaros' deal and finally having Matt Walker off the books...that would just bring me to my knees

I thought the Rangers blogger had a pretty good take on the whole thing.
It seems very unlikely that the Rangers will be able to get anything back for him at the TDL and he will probably finish the season there and if they can't reach a deal try the UFA waters. |

Teams see value in it, and honestly teams have done it for years. Corsi didn't get invented last summer. It's been around since the 1980s.
It won't and shouldn't replace watching the games, and people that really value it don't just look at the stats in a vacuum as some have suggested here. Dismissing them out of hand is more stupid than actually only using them in a vacuum

Says who? Are most team's doing this?
The sport's operated just fine without them being as popular they are now for quite some time. They have limited use and their flaws are documented.
That being said, if a team can find a way to use them that positively affects their organization, even in a minuscule manner, you bet your ass they'll do it. |

Agreed. There is a reason teams still fly scouts out to games. And there is a reason these stat systems are still used.
I dont really see a point, or end, to this argument. |

Yeah but no teams want to trade with the Flyers. Most certainly not a Canadian team. Ever since Clarke offer-sheeted Kesler and Holmgren with Weber along with his continued page headline type moves - it's my opinion the Flyers are kind of franked moving forward on any trades. The NHL doesn't trust the Flyers. - Pixote Andolini

And, since he's their player and their captain, that's the only exception I'd make. If the Rangers want to overpay the guy, go for it. You drafted him, brought him up, he's your leader. Fine.
But that's it. I realize that he's going to get the term and dollars, but man, I took a look around the league last night, after we talked about it yesterday.
Let's just say there aren't many 35-year-old Ryan Callahans providing "leadership" and "energy." |
