Says who? Are most team's doing this?
The sport's operated just fine without them all this time now. They have limited use and their flaws are documented.
That being said, if a team can find a way to use them that positively affects their organization, even in a minuscule manner, you bet your ass they'll do it. - mochoson
A lot of teams do. In fact the Devils are now looking for a Director of Analytics.
The Sharks, Preds and others have really strongly embraced Analytics as well. Chicago and Phoenix also utilize analytics heavily. |

Teams see value in it, and honestly teams have done it for years. Corsi didn't get invented last summer. It's been around since the 1980s.
It won't and shouldn't replace watching the games, and people that really value it don't just look at the stats in a vacuum as some have suggested here. Dismissing them out of hand is more stupid than actually only using them in a vacuum - Jsaquella
I agree, I mean junior teams use it on 15 & 16 year old's they look to bring in to their leagues. That's in addition to all the games and tournaments they watch with the purpose of visually scouting.
They then pair that with scouting notes. One good example is Mitchell Marner who London took at the end of round 1 because all the other teams felt he was too small. And watching plenty of him the kid has got tremendous talent. |

I'm sure they do. There's still going to be scouts sent to watch games. That's all Im saying.

And, since he's their player and their captain, that's the only exception I'd make. If the Rangers want to overpay the guy, go for it. You drafted him, brought him up, he's your leader. Fine.
But that's it. I realize that he's going to get the term and dollars, but man, I took a look around the league last night, after we talked about it yesterday.
Let's just say there aren't many 35-year-old Ryan Callahans providing "leadership" and "energy." - AllInForFlyers
That's my concern. He's 28 now, middle of his prime. He's a smaller guy playing a very physical style. Those guys tend to break down in their early to mid 30's.
He signs a 7 year deal, he'll very likely be a guy that is a cap drag in the last few years of the deal |

And you don't take away scouts watching games. You take the notes and info they provide and use that with advanced stats. |

do you really want a player that is willing to play for how many seasons without telling anyone that his name is spelled wrong? Asking for trouble. I don't need analytics for that. |

The uses are limited only by the user. Obviously they will never replace scouts on the ground and video review. But there's many uses and ways to expand their usage.

A lot of teams use their own advanced analytics in assessing players. But there's not much evidence to suggest that they place as much value and weight on the advanced statistics such as Corsi as some do on here. The idea of possession being a huge key to Hockey is nothing new to the game.

Man, I'd swap out "very likely" and insert "absolutely will" in 95 percent of the guys who have Callahan's body type, size and skillset

The analytics that teams are using and talking about are in a lot of cases far different from the analytics used in today's discussion such as Corsi, or CorsiRel.

The Canadian Business article (2nd link) estimates that roughly 15 percent of the NHL’s clubs devote at least one employee to the study of advanced analytics. That may not be a significant number, but the fact one of those clubs is the Stanley Cup-champion Chicago Blackhawks

Does a team winning 2 cups recently suggest it's something that's needed for others to put more stock in when looking at their team and everything they do to form it? |

Actually, they're not. Corsi was created by a NHL assistant coach, named Jim Corsi. These stats, might go by different names, but there's a lot more than just Corsi & CorsiRel to it.
But the same sort of stats you find on behindthenet.ca or ExtraSkater.com are the same things that analytic minded teams are looking at. In fact the author of the piece you linked to has done statistical consulting for the Predators and I'll take his opinions and stats reporting over yours.
There's no magic set of stats that teams like LA or Chicago use. They might calculate them differently or have different names for them, but it's largely the same stats you find at places like those I have mentioned. |

If you look at the SBNation blog MJL linked to you will see the last 5 Cup winners(Chicagox2) mentioned as using analytics in some way shape or form, along with the runner ups in 2013 & 2011.
It's not enough to simply eyeball guys anymore.

I watch a ton of Blackhawks games, and of course they use it. They value puck possession, hockey sense and puck skills more than just about anybody I've seen.
With the ages of the players they have, God save this league if they somehow manage to find the right No. 2 center for how they play. That hole they have there, along with the age of Michal Roszival, is the only reason they aren't terrorizing this league more than they are.
And, oh yeah: With the exception of a guy or two, they can all skate.
They've even been scratching playoff hero Bryan Bickell of late; you wonder if they're going to use him as a piece to land that No. 2 center they've wanted for years |
