Wonder if that one will be on Grossmann's highlight reel...bad play all around, by most of the guys on ice, but why leave the front of the net? - Jsaquella
Coverage at that point is man to man. Grossmann has his check, which is Thronton all the way. The mix up is between Coburn and Giroux, who lost Nieto, not Grossmann.

You have such a hatred bias for Grossmann. You wanted him to leave Thornton uncovered? It was a 3v3 down low. Giroux lost his man and Coburn needed to help him. Giroux needs to pick up Nieto in that circumstance. The defenseman and center work together. They will alternate depending on where the players are. In that case Giroux needs to head to the front of the net and take Nieto. - PhillySportsGuy
That's correct. The coverage is man to man at that point. |

Not at all. Fundamental defensive zone coverage. Grossmann stayed with his check. This is a clear example of how Grossmann has been blamed for goals scored when he played his man perfectly. - MJL

It's just a clear example of how Grossmann has been scapegoated this Season. Many, many times this Season, a goal has been scored against with Grossmann on the ice, he is solid in his coverage. The breakdown is elsewhere, and he get's the blame.
But on another note. Many thought this West Coast swing would bury the Flyers. Nope, not the case! Go Flyers!
How the Flyers win or lose has been very consistent this year. If they show up and skate, they can compete against anyone. And they go how Giroux goes. |

Grossmann is what he is: a solid, 2nd pair, defensive dman with limited mobility.
Sadly this type of dman is much easier to find and acquire than one with mobility and skill which is the Flyers greatest need. |

Gotta give some props to the scouts for finding read/raffl. Getting 2 undrafted full time players is huge in a cap world. |

Why are some of you already blaming players for blowing coverages? Allowing goals? Someone is going to make a mistake or get beat every game. FLYERS WIN 5-2 against a great team. I want nothing but positives please. |

I'm on record that they should cash in Laughton and the 2014 first if the right deal is there, but I'm honest enough to admit that while I think they're good enough to buy, they sometimes look like the farthest thing from what I think they are, as Boston showed me - AllInForFlyers
A pick around the middle of this year's first round and Laughton is not going to get you a big return, especially not at the trade deadline. |

How bout Gus and schenn?! +6 on the road trip. Everyone feel a little better about not having the Finnish god of defense next year? I love him but he's cooked. Gotta keep streit on the top pp |

When he's healthy (which may not be till after the Olympics) I would think about playing him and Streit together, with Meszaros as the 7th guy. Leave the Coburn-Grossmann and Gus-Schenn pairings alone. |

Guess he shouldnt be blamed for the stupid penalty he took either.
Grossmann and Coburn both had a meh, first period before they (and the entire team) took over.
I understand your idea of coverage, but there should never be a point where two d-men are below the goal line on the same side of the ice when your center is along the half boards fighting for a puck... Thats where the problem originated.
Giroux was battling Burns.. as he is fighting for the puck both Coburn and Grossmann coast into the picture. At that point it was G vs Burns, Grossmann vs Thornton (who he followed to the far side boards (near boards in the video) and Coburn vs no one. Coby continues to press further towards the ensuing puck battle as Grossmann loops around following Thornton. He follows Big Joe through the crease and down behind the goal line where Burns emerges with the puck and Coburn hops in to defend. As that happens Burns fires a quick pretty pass right into the slot where Nieto is sitting pretty.
A few problems I have with it.
1- It was already a 2v1 with Coburn and G in the corner and Burns with the puck. Grossmann could have let Thornton go into the corner as well and it would still have been a "Man vs man" situation. Instead he leaves the front of the net WIDE open following a guy who never touches the puck.
2- It was clearly Girouxs battle in the corner. He lost it, but was still going at Burns as Burns turns his shoulder ( the beginning of his pretty back hand pass). Coburn steps in to take over the battle, but, in doing so leaves a passing lane open to the slot (also on Giroux)
3- Giroux, who clearly didnt wanna give up pursuit gets caught in the corner after Coburn takes over the battle. Had he realized earlier that he was too deep he could have checked back to the slot.
All in all, I think all three have a bit of blame resting on their shoulders. |

I agree. I mean, we were really good at the end of last year with a top-6 of Lauridsen, Schenn, Konan, Gervais, Manning, and Lilja. So why do we need guys like Timonen, Grossmann, etc? It's clear we had a winning team with these guys, so why would we ever need more than 1-2 legit NHL defensemen? The fact that we've won 2 games without Timonen proves that he is the weak link on this team. |

Giroux is 11th in points in the NHL despite a terrible October..
Hell, if you throw away October, and look at what he has done since:
46 games, 18 goals, 31 assists, 49 points, +6
.. Now expand those numbers to the 57 games he has played and he would have 61 points... and would sit at #5 in the league in points.
He has been earning his pay check. |

He certainly did. It's amazing what playing a few games in a row can do to a player's confidence. |
