Id have to check the CORSI numbers again first..
But seriously of course it would be great to do that. I'm sure lots of teams are eager to trade us the type of guys we need.
If you can't get the type of dman they need, strong 2 way defensemen, then id rather go with what we have. I don't see the point in trading an asset for strictly offensive defenseman that aren't the long term answer. I like our young forwards a lot and don't want to move any of them unless it's for a long term answer on defense. Otherwise, we are just moving holes around the line up without truly plugging any. - funmaster18
I agree, I don't want another one way offensive defenseman. And another player that has be used only in certain situations. I want an all around 2 way player that can play in all situations, and be trusted to do it well. |

same here, unless his leg issues are still bothering him from the Colorado game.
Wonder if Rosehill plays? Flames are a team that employs a few goons on the 4th line - puckhead17

They really had the chance to turn Coburn into a solid two way player. Instead, because of the D we had over the years with Coburn, we forced him into a shut down role and he lost what offensive talent he had.
Mez was a decent two way guy for a while before the injury bug crushed him. And instead of letting him regain his form, we beat him over the head with pucks and leave him as a healthy scratch.
Schenn - Potential to be a decent shut down guy (nothing great, nothing bad)
Grossman - Is a defensive minded only dman. Does it well IMO.
Coburn - Shut down guy
Timonen - 2 way
Streit - offensive mind only
Mez - maybe 2 way?
Not exactly the best mix of players on the back end. |

It'd be great if they could do something like you PMed me a while back, like swing a trade for one two way defender and add another in free agency.
With four defensemen under contract for next year in Schenn, Gross, Coburn, and Streit, I don't think this blueline is at all impossible to fix. Even if you move one of them (either as part of said trade, or for cap flexibility, or whatev), they can re-up Gustafsson to inexpensively round out the blueline. |

60 minute effort, go into the break on a high note. The last few games have shown a better all around effort, need to see this for the rest of the season. |

Huh Bill what are you getting at? Mason lets less goals in per 20 games when Gusty is in the line up: http://stats.hockeyanalys...ue&season=2013-14&sit=5v5 |

Man.. stats are getting way to indepth...
Rinaldo plays against other teams top lines less than almost any other player on the team. Therefor, we should play Rinaldo more to keep the other teams best players on the bench.

according to the stats rinaldo being in the lineup has negligible effect on mason's performance |

On a related note, I had a long talk with a veteran NHL pro scout on Thursday about the whole advanced statistics trend. To put it politely, he said he still views it as essentially a collection of worthless information and said that hockey is the sport that is least conducive to that sort of data.
I won't go nearly that far. Also, there are a growing number of people within the game that see validity in it (although I have yet to meet anyone who thinks it does anything more than supplements -- not replaces -- traditional methods of scouting and analyzing players).
I think it gives you tools for seeing some important facets of the game. But I do think that assigning individual "credit" or blame for something of the above nature -- short of the player being a franchise defenseman or someone who clearly doesn't belong on an NHL -- gives every bit as distorted of a picture as completely ignoring it.
When Gustafsson has done his job, he's stayed in the lineup for Berube. When he hasn't, he's ended up a healthy scratch.

You're doing it wrong.
You can't just pull one number out, not put it into any kind of context, and expect it to mean anything.
1) Gus hasn't had as many minutes as the other D, so you're dealing with a smaller sample size,
2) Gus also doesn't face high levels of competition, so of course those kinds of players are going to score less goals on Mason.
edit:
3) Mason's SV% when Gus has been on the ice has been .951... way higher than it is for any other member of the D |

Coburn showed a lot of promise offensively earlier in his career, I don't know where that went, but it's not there now. Meszaros although he may be the most talented defenseman the Flyers have, he's just not back to where he was before. Whether it's mental, preventive or what. But he just doesn't have that physical edge that he used to have. No doubt the mix needs to change.

I respect your opinion Bill, and I think you're generally well thought out and even-handed with your analysis, so it's sad to see you of all people repeating the single most common misconception about analytics: that it somehow strives to replace the need to watch the games. |
