Regarding #2, according to corsi, Gus is 4th in terms of offensive quality of competition faced behind Coburn, Grossman, and kimmo. - fecondo
He's ranked 5th among Flyers D in Corsi-Rel (the team can expect to give up 3-4 more shot events against per 60 when he's on vs when he's off)... and that's in sheltered minutes. |

it's not like gusty just does nothing on the ice he must contribute something to help with those stats - 2Real
You were making it sound as if he were solely responsible for the difference... I'm saying there's no way you could know that just from that one number. |

His Corsi-Rel of the competition he's facing is ranked 7th among the D... only Hal Gill has gotten more favorable matchups. |

Anybody else see the Flames goalie try to sell a call?
They never really call the unsportsmanlike or embellishment penalties enough. |

That could be the case, but it doesn't mean Gus is solely responsible for that. Correlation does not equal causation, especially in a tiny sample size, and when there could be a thousand other variables that go into GA/60 than the play of one guy. - Tomahawk
Well said. And on another note. I don't like Gustafsson being scratched.

getting 20 mins a night is sheltered minutes? Damn that's a lot of sheltered minutes in a game...
He gets scratched , maybe they're trying to give Mezzy some game time before the Olympics?
Or maybe berube just has a thing against small, good puck handling and skating Dmen. |

And that's where advanced stats get a bit messy. If you go by his corsi hart qoc, Gus is ranked 1st in overall quality of opponents faced. |

uh yes Mason with GA20 with: 0.449 Mason GA20 without 0.878 - 2Real
Sorry, thought you said SV%. Anyway, the .951SV% of Flyers' goalies when Gus is on the ice is the main contributor to the GAA improvement when he's out there. |

He's mostly facing 3rd/4th-line quality guys for that 20-mins. Whereas Kimmo and Coburn are head-to-head versus the best the other team has to offer for their 20+ mins.
That's why it's important to consider quality of competition when looking at every other number.

Schenn getting 15/16 minutes a night early in the season is getting sheltered. When you're playing nearly 20 minutes a night i don't know how you can say someone is getting sheltered even if he isn't facing the other team's top line, but that's just my opinion. |

if gusty is getting more minutes he has more chances to get exposed but oh well the stats don't lie he's not getting exposed |
