I've always thought a heavy slapshot is overrated for a defenseman. Being able to get a shot through traffic is much more important.

It's like a pitcher being able to throw high 90s. It's a plus, but it's more important that he locate.

From when I've watched he's used a slap shot very little.

I haven't seen a ton of him, but he hasn't shown much offensive ability. I was even surprised when I looked at his numbers. I thought they would be lower. I'm not the type to overvalue stats though. I still see him as a top 4 defenseman. I just see him as a defensive defenseman.

BTW: talked to an NHL scout yesterday. He says Morin is going to be a monster No. 1 d-man someday. Great news for the Flyers

Why?

Was it the old ass scout I watched on Flight Plan piss and moan and beg for the flyers to draft his draft project Morin?

We seem to be the only thread on HB where on a pagely basis there is guaranteed to be some type of dissertation post about the team. It's strange

I wouldn't expect him to put up a ton but who knows if that changes at this level. Don't always judge what goes on at juniors as the end all be all of a players ability

Well no offense to Daley, but if they view Daley as a replacement for Timonen. The Flyers are in big trouble.
- MJL

Not ideal but you take what you can get until someone in the minors is ready to make the jump to the Pros

I would take another Coburn type d-man in the system with maybe a bit more physical edge.

I am in NO WAY comparing the two. I was just curious as to what kind of player Shea Weber was to get himself drafted in the second round?

Serious question. I'm not very familiar with his junior career or what the consensus was on him as a prospect.

How often do defenseman develop offense in the NHL when they weren't really scorers in Juniors? Thats not a rhetorical question. I'm wondering if and how often it happens.

A Q&A with prospect Shea Weber in 2005. Extremely accomplished in his junior career. For Morin to keep pace, he has to be on that world junior team next winter and be a major contributor to a gold winner, for starters.

I guess he thought you would, since you seem to follow the CHL closer than most of us follow the flyers

It's mostly OHL for me with some QMJHL (which is mostly on mute since I don't speak or understand French) & some WHL but limited due to the start times.

I did watch some of Morin last night & tonight but it was twofold because I wanted to see some other draft prospects.

The Flyers really need him to come through. Pretty risk pick they made IMO.

Do you view it risky because you didn't know much about him when they took him or the fact he began his draft year off the radar of many teams and scouting reports?

Because following many draft people his was known but like anybody else needed to see him develop over the course of the season.

Other then the inherent risk involved with almost any draft pick, what makes it pretty risky? One NHL Scout thinks he's going to be a monster #1 defenseman.

That is great, thanks. But what were the rank and file scouts saying? Do any of our draftniks have any insight? Was he projected to be the two way stud he is now?

Yea risky bc from everything I read he was viewed as a raw prospect. Where some others were viewed as more of a shoe in as a future top 4 D prospect. Their skills were more refined (Ristolainen, The other guy that went to Buffalo).

Are you talking about last season or this season for Morin?

Less accomplished. There seems to be a higher chance of him bombing or hitting his supposed high ceiling. Less of a known quantity.
