Iginla's signed at 1-year, $1.8M in base salary. - Tomahawk
That's true, but my reply was towards a player overcoming physical decline. |

The only one that bothers me is when people write an enormous paragraph, which should really be 3 paragraphs. It's difficult to read something like that, let alone follow the thoughts |

I had no problem signing VL for a year or 2, if the option presented itself.
I just feel 5 years was 3 too many. |

I've been on this board for 4 years now. This is the first time I've ever called someone out for anything remotely grammatical. But yes, I'm a huge douche and just love to flex my muscles. |

Players don't tend to fade linearly into the sunset... for most guys, one day it just suddenly catches up with them and their production plummets, as they can no longer hold off younger players for cushy line assignments and coveted PP time.
Doesn't that sound like what's happening w/ Vinny for the past couple of seasons? Tyler Johnson and Alex Killorn stole his ice in Tampa... Schenn, Coots (and soon Laughton) are doing it here.
Can he pull a Modano/Primeau and transition into a defensive role? With Couturier already in the lineup, would that even be a help? - Tomahawk
No, it doesn't sound like that's what's happening to VL here. The question is can Lecavalier be a good player for the Flyers moving forward? There's evidence of it going both ways. Some players fade and fall off a cliff. But there is also ample evidence that players in the NHL can continue playing at a high level well into their 30's. To be fair, both sides need ot be considered. So who wants to be optimistic, and who wants to be pessimistic?
The Flyers aren't asking Lecavalier to be top dog and to be the offensive catalyst. They're asking him to be a verteran to support the young players, that the team is built around. And ot give them a proven veteran scorer to make the 2nd line better. |

Like Vinny, Iginla's still not a bad player despite all the hard miles. Problem is, Iginla's already transitioned to the pay-grade of a veteran, supporting cast member. Nobody here would have a complaint at all if they had gotten VL on a 1-year deal at the present cap hit. It's years 2-5 that we're questioning. |

Let's compare apples to apples here. What was iginla's contract like at 33? The Flyers signed Lecavalier at 33, not 38. If they signed Lecavalier to a 5 year deal at 38, I'd have a problem with it. But they didn't. They signed him at 33. And let's not just conveniently forget that Iginla has 4.2M in performance bonuses attached to his one year deal. |

yeah...but at 33 why would he sign anywhere for only 2 years? as someone has stated early (and i have been saying on this board for a while now) players play at a high level into their upper 30's with regularity. at that point who knows what top 9 forwards will be getting in this league. we've seen with guys like Jagr, Selannne, and Iginla, they can contribute the type of numbers younger forwards getting similar deal can put up. |

The players you mentioned have all signed 1 or 2 year deals, I think Detroit, or Montreal, (or both), may have been interested in signing him as well.
I think we bid against ourselves sometimes, I just don't like the term for a player with 16 years of wear & tear. |

I think having a broken back may be a small factor in Vinny not being the player we have seen in past years and earlier in the season.
I think the time off will do wonders for him physically. I think, since he has expressed a willingness to play at wing, we just leave him there and keep baby Schenn at center.
Im not ready to put him on the retirement train just yet, I still think he will be a productive player for the Flyers.

You mean he's 33 years YOUNG. But yes, I will have an issue when he's 36-37, as I doubt he'll be a good value at that time. But hey, with the cap going up, it may be market value at that time. |

Iginla signed his $35M deal fresh off a 50-goal, 98-point season at age 30/31 -- until this season, he never failed to score at a 30-goal pace.
Vinny's was freshly CBO'd, with steadily declining goal totals, in a steadily declining role in Tampa.
Iginla at age 33 was still a legitimate top-line player. So why does Vinny have job security until age 38/39, and Iggy's the one twisting in the wind come July 1? Doesn't make sense to me. |
