Yes, my bad, you are correct sir.
Tampa wanted him back for probably the same money he's making now. |

He hasn't played much center. They clearly didn't evaluate their team very well. I never wanted B Schenn to play wing. I wanted him at center. It was a frustrating signing - PhillySportsGuy
wasn't he centering Schenn and Simmonds when he had all the success in the early going? |

what does that have to do with anything? my points are counter to a specific point made by another poster. that's how message baords work. we are all aware people have different opinions and feelings. that doesn't take away the fact i will try to support mine against yours with points/facts/etc.
that's why we are all here? right? - eshake
Yes, you are right.
you like the deal, I do not.

Vinny played center until he got hurt. There's no reason Schenn couldn't have developed as a winger if he had gotten the chance to stay there, but injuries dictated otherwise. Patrick Sharp and Jeff Carter managed the transition to wing pretty well, but people here freak out about centers moving to wing. |

I think the difference is that Chiarelli doesn't put himself in a position where he absolutely needs to sign someone. The Flyers always seem like they need guys - PhillySportsGuy
Not only that, but their inefficient/wasteful use of cap space forces them to give out more term to FA's to get a manageable cap hit.
Imagine if they had Vinny's $4M+ of cap-space this year to throw at a UFA like Boyle to get him to accept a shorter term to minimize the risk.
Edit: or had cap-space last summer to get Streit on a shorter-term. |

So did Batman, and he was able to come back stronger than ever while rehabbing in a cave.
Lecavalier has all of the technology in the world at his disposal.
What I'm getting at is, as long as he employs Morgan Freeman as the world's best electrical/mechanical/chemical engineer, he'll be able to save Gotham City from a nuclear bomb. |

It also took Carter about a year to settle in as a winger...until about May of 2012. |

ha, definitely seems like an ugly injury but he DID come right back.....FWIW? i guess we just have to take him and the trainers on their word.
the point i guess is, if he DOESN'T get hurt, he still is at 2nd center (as they signed him to play) and Schenner is on wing.
Schenn had success there too, i believe, in the early going.

Center is a more valuable position. You went your best players playing center. It's rare to have a winger control the flow of the game. There are only a handful who are capable of doing that.
I feel Schenn and Couturier are better centers than Vinny. I think they are better centers than Vinny now, next year and every year from now until they retire. |

Already feeling flyers withdrawal.. As far as VL goes, I'm not thrilled with the length but I'll wait until year 2 or 3 to start fearing it was a mistake. He's shown both reasons for why he was a great pick up and why people are skeptical of the length. I agree with whoever said argus Olympic break may be good for him, though I think he was starting to pick it up lately. |

He played wing sparingly, mostly only in the 2010 SCF (because Giroux and Briere's lines were killing it). He played mostly wing a bit the next year (mostly C) and was expected to be a C in Cbs. Once he was traded to LA, he switched to wing again, and has been doing a pretty good job. |

That's an interesting thought, and Iggy hand-picked Boston, too.
But what separates Chiarelli from Homer is he was able to take advantage of those circumstances to fill a need, whereas Homer was tossing prudence out the window in order to land a guy that wasn't helping their problems on the blueline. - Tomahawk
Iginla is getting at least $5.5m this season, and the Bruins could face an overage penalty to start next season. It's disingenuous of you to act like his $1.8m base salary is in any way relevant when comparing Iginla and Lecavalier.

Boston played its fifth game on Monday, a 3-2 loss to Detroit. That puts Jarome Iginla halfway towards collecting one of the biggest bonuses of his incentive-laden contract: $3.7 million for appearing in 10 games. Iginla's base salary is $1.8M, but is structured this way to shift much of the cap stress until next season. |

They may have been more patient with him at that position, the Flyers were not.

I was speaking more to the term than the cap hit... the low base hit is nice, but not the basis of my position. |

All we need to do is fire Jim McCrossin and hire that old wise prison doctor from The Pit to rehab Vinny's back and we'll be parading down Broad Street.

speaking of JVR.... 47 points in 58 games this season. really wish we'd have kept him. - moylander
His point per TOI this year is right about his average over the past 4 years. He isn't suddenly a better player, just more opportunity. |

Iginla signed his $35M deal fresh off a 50-goal, 98-point season at age 30/31 -- until this season, he never failed to score at a 30-goal pace.
Vinny's was freshly CBO'd, with steadily declining goal totals, in a steadily declining role in Tampa.
Iginla at age 33 was still a legitimate top-line player. So why does Vinny have job security until age 38/39, and Iggy's the one twisting in the wind come July 1? Doesn't make sense to me. - Tomahawk
And what happened during the course of that new deal that Iginla signed? His numbers declined. But that's not the issue. Of course Lecavalier is declining as a players. That's been going on for a while now. The issue is, can he still be a good player, and will he be worth his cap hit. I believe that he will. The Flyers didn't sign Lecavalier to a deal worthy of a first line player, and in my view they aren't expecting him to be a first line player.
I'm pretty sure that at the current rate that Iginla is playing at, barring a serious injury, he's going to be able to keep playing, and will have a job in the future as an NHL player as long as he wants to keep playing. The guy has made over 78M playing Hockey. |
