Something I read says that Russia's big weakness was their defense. I haven't looked at their lineup, but in general, you don't hear of top tier defenders being Russian. - HonkFortheGoose
Dmitri Kalinin begs to differ. |

Here's an interesting question that very few around here can answer.
You're originally from England, so obviously you don't have a hockey team competing. Is there one that you pick in particular? Would you consider yourself to be less biased about the teams since none of them are from your home country? Or do you consider the US team to be your team, since you reside here and have for a while?
(If any of this offends you for some reason, I apologize. That's certainly not my intention). - HonkFortheGoose
No offense at all. I absolutely root for USA, I'm a US citizen and I've lived here for 10 years. I've never felt more "at home" than I have here if that makes sense and hockey has been a huge part of my life here.
I get mixed emotions with certain sports I grew up with, but hockey is cut and dry as I had no previous exposure to it. |

Well, Sam lives in the US but is originally from England so I was curious if he had any kind of partiality to one team or if he just enjoyed watching the hockey tournament. I've met him before so I'm not surprised by his answer but thought it would be an interesting one to ask.

I didn't think you'd be offended, but just wanted to make sure. Sometimes things don't come across in type as you would think so just wanted to clarify.
Now, where's MikeyOz when we need him. I'd be interested to get his take on it too, since he lives in Australia. |

Their D isn't great. But if one of their Goalie gets hot and steals games like they are capable of then they could be a real threat. Just like Czechs rode Hasek to a gold and US rode Miller to silver. Neither teams should have made it as far as they did but goaltending can be a difference maker. |

It's funny when you think about the hockey demographic spread over Europe. Obviously you have countries that branch out of Russia where it is hugely popular (Scandanavia, Latvia, etc) then you have pockets in Central Europe (Germany, Slovenia, Czech Republic). But there are countries in between that have large populations and similar cultures where you wonder how it doesn't produce more talent.
I actually think hockey would work in England if they weren't such traditionalists.
I would also love to see some hockey players come out of Italy and the Netherlands as both have rich and competitive sports histories. |

I was surprised to find a decent ice hockey fan base up in Scotland, particularly at the Olympic level. Speaking of the UK, I just realized ill have to watch the games...with BBC commentary |

Wow that will be interesting. They'll probably wonder why penalties aren't being called when two players touch and one of them doesn't start crying and rolling around in pain. |

I think the islanders will move vanek for a 2014 first rd pick and give us their pick this coming draft instead of 2015 - homiedclown
That would be ideal IMO. As much as I want a few chances for McDavid. I think the Isles are starting to turn the corner. If we can get a top 5-7 pick from them....take it |

There is a chance they take a big step backwards though if they let Mcdonald go and do not address the D and goalies
3 years ago hey had P.A., Moulson up front and Okposo on the second line
Now P.A. is gone, Moulson is gone for Vanek, Vanek is gone
they could tank for the first pick next year |

They have a lot of good young players though. I don't know it's tough. It would suck if they ended up being really good next year, sounds like they plan on spending too |

I can answer from experience, my Grandparents are from England, while my mother and myself were born here, ever since my Grandfather (RIP) moved here he supported the US in international competition (when UK wasn't involved) mainly as way of showing his gratefulness for what the country gave his family. I know that probably doesn't apply to all immigrants but I always respected that man for how he was and figured I would share. |

It's an interesting topic because the US does have so many people from other nations in it. Just walking around my work building is a good indicator of it. Just to walk from one end to the other you could easily hear 3-4 different languages. But that's what happens when you work for one of the largest global banks. |
