Do I need to bring up Columbine, Virginia Tech, Newtown, or the hundreds of other mass school shootings? You don't see anything wrong with guns being freely available at WalMart? It doesn't matter if you have background checks, some people aren't criminals before they go on a killing spree, and having guns so readily available means criminals can easily get their hands on them regardless.

The "right to bear arms" nonsense was written during a time of civil war in which muskets were the weapon of choice. Society has come a long way since then and we live in a completely different time. Don Cherry thought he might be fired over his pro-American rant on a recent Coach's Corner, but that didn't stop him from going on a U.S. radio show Monday to give a tongue-lashing to Quebecers who booed the American national anthem, Canada for not sending troops to Iraq and "those kooks" protesting the war.

Cherry, interviewed on the Jim Rome syndicated program, also took a swing at filmmaker Michael Moore, came to Wayne Gretzky's defence and chided Canada's "left-wing" media.

Cherry told Rome the CBC was "awful upset" about his and Ron MacLean's heated seven-minute debate over the Iraq war during a March 22 Coach's Corner on Hockey Night in Canada.

"You have to realize the CBC is government owned," Cherry said on the program, which is broadcast across the U.S. and Canada.

"You have to say the government was against it [the war] and I'm for it and I'm on a government program. I really thought this could be the end."

The CBC was flooded with 1,500 calls and e-mails after the segment, many of them denouncing Cherry's stance.

Even though he and MacLean may have got carried away on the topic, a defiant Cherry said he would resist any attempt by the CBC to muzzle him.

"I don't back down one bit," he said.

"I'd have to walk. I just don't go out and say these things just to be controversial. I believe in my heart this is what you have to say. I have to admit we did get carried away, but that's the way it is. If you have to go, you have to go. I had a good ride. If you have to go, you go out on your shield."

CBC officials didn't immediately return telephone calls Monday about Cherry's comments.

During the interview, Cherry threw a bodycheck at Prime Minister Jean Chrétien for not supporting the U.S.-led war in Iraq.

"I was always proud of Canada but this here is an embarrassment," he said.

"It's a damn shame."

He also reiterated his frustration over Montreal Canadiens' fans booing the U.S. national anthem at a recent game against the New York Islanders.

"It's just a damn shame they had to boo the Star Spangled Banner in Quebec," said Cherry.

"You have to realize it's Quebec and it's French Canadians.

"I wish everybody could have seen the Toronto Maple Leaf Gardens here in English Canada when they were singing the Star Spangled Banner. Everybody was cheering and hollering and there was American flags all over."

Cherry said he hopes Americans understand most Canadians are not anti-American.

"The true Canadians do not feel the way they do in Quebec there," he said.

"Believe me, the majority of the people in Canada love the United States. We know you'd be there to help us and don't think too bad of us."

Cherry didn't like the antiwar comments Moore made while accepting his best documentary Oscar for the film Bowling for Columbine.

"If Michael Moore would have done that a month ago that would have been okay," Cherry said.

"But once the boys are over there fighting and dying, you have to stick beside them. Those kooks that are out on the street protesting the war are only encouraging Saddam Hussein."

He also was incensed that a sign reading U$ Lackey was hung on a statue of Gretzky in Edmonton to protest the hockey star's comments supporting U.S. President George W. Bush.

"He's Canadian all the way," Cherry said of Gretzky.

"If there's anything against the States the Canadian press picks it up. That's one jerk, like Michael Moore, he hangs a sign and now it's all over North America."

In an interview last week, MacLean, who supported Canada's stance, said he stood behind what he said about the war and thought he said it in the right place.

MacLean and Cherry were not disciplined by CBC brass but were told their war debate was not appropriate. The two stuck to hockey during Saturday's edition of Coach's Corner.

"This one wasn't much fun," he said.

"It was a serious one, down to the short strokes."

He said his pro-American stance brings praise from ordinary Canadians but criticism from the media.

"Our media up here is totally left wing," he said.

"It's socialist, left wing, pinko, commies. I got ripped to shreds in the left-wing media. That's the chance you take. I don't regret it and If I had to I'd do it over again."
