So you wouldn't trade Couturier, Morin 2014 1st for Weber?
- PhillySportsGuy

Those kinds of all-eggs-in-one-basket type of trades haven't exactly been kind to them in the past... Lindros, Pronger, et al.

The best trades over the past 25-years have been generally when they get multiple assets for one "superior" player: Recchi for 37/10, Richards/Carter trades, Renberg+ for 4 1st-rounders, Lindros for Johnsson++, Forsberg for 44/19+.

It's not really crying or complaining.... As it stands right now the Flyers traded a first line power forward for a third pairing defenseman. It's trades like this that set a franchise back, and are tough to recover from.
- PLindbergh31

JVR wasn't exactly a first line power forward at the time of the trade. They tried him their several times but couldn't compete. Hartnell, Simmonds were and maybe still are better power forwards. If JVR was still in the mix... Not sure if he would have broken out and crack the 1st line. He might still be fighting for minute on the 3rd line (with our defense really struggling, Hal Gill playing every night). He may have needed the change to another team to breakout.

As for L.Schenn. He's still only 24. Not that I expect a break out season and he becomes dominant... But, he still could level out a bit and become a very stable defense-defenseman. Something the team needs.

How many forward only teams ever get to the SC? Right now and for the forseeable future this team is a bunch of forwards... and that is it. Winning teams build from the back end out. Its not about the grass is greener - its about putting the right pieces in place to win a cup now and in the future. I hope they keep developing Morin, Hagg, Ghost, etc - its not like I'm suggesting trading the entire team with the cupboard too to get Weber.
- moylander

Back to Bill's blog... I'm all-in favor of slow development of Morin. However, I wouldn't mind if they put some pressure of Alt, Ghost, or Hagg. Sometimes (personalty dependent...) baptism by fire works...

Did they really have to trade Carter/Richards, and dole out $51M to improve the goaltending? A much more modest price of Leighton and a 3rd seems to have done the trick instead.
- Tomahawk

Leighton would not have "done the trick"... He wouldn't have gotten them to a SCF. So, take a gamble on Bryz. Bryz did not turn out to be stellar, but a hell of a lot better than Leighton.

Homer pull the trigger on those deals for multiple purposes; Sure goaltending was one, attitude of Carter/Richards.... But, I still think they were - as Homer said - they were and are good hockey trades. Every year that clicks by confirms it. Whenever, you can trade a guy and get two guys that will be just as good - you make the trade. And, it didn't take long for the improvement.

Just a Homer trade update... That trade brought in 3 of our top five scorers. The two older players, Simmonds/Voracek (42/40) both have more pts than either Carter/Richards (37/36). Simmonds is just 2 goals short of Carters total, and plays in front of the net with equal feistiness as Richards. And, Jake is quick and a good playmaker. B. Schenn (32pts) jumped into the Flyers top 5 scorers with 8 more goals than Richards and is only 4-5 pts away from Carter/Richards. Not to mention Coots (respectable 28pts, for his role on line 3).

By Leighton and a third he means the price paid for Mason.

They are, and they would still have a better forward corps than Nashville even IF they traded Giroux for Weber.
- MBFlyerfan

They would, but I don't think they'd have the forward corp that is good enough to win the Cup. They'd be missing that one player that is a catalyst for the team that I think they would then need if they traded Giroux. And the conversation would then move towards needing a #1 Center.

I advocate trading for Weber if the price is right. I don't advocate decimating the rest of the team to fill one hole. I think that Giroux and Couturier are both integral parts of building a complete team that can truly be a contender. So I don't want to trade either player. So if the price isn't right, then I advocate what others have suggested. Exercise patience, and let the prospects develop. And see what falls out of the tree down the line.
I remember before LA won the Cup, thier fanbase was ripping their GM on a daily basis, saying he was afraid to pull the trigger on a deal. Well he had patience and made the right moves. Got lucky and had some players step up and they had a parade.
