Yes, how a team decides to allocate it's cap spending is choices. Who they choose to try and re-sign, who they decide to wait on. And who they decide to go after in Free Agency.
- MJL

You're making no distinction between a choice that represents Plan A, Plan B or Plan F. That's pretty important.

I'm not talking about other teams. I'm talking about the Flyers.

Give me a fictitious example. Something that could happen that would construed as cap problems.

That's exactly what he's saying. It's all "choices" and media BS.
- Tomahawk

To be fair, I don't think it's any more laughable than assuming whatever rumor shows the Flyers to be irresponsible is true. It just seems like two sides of a debate assuming anything that agrees with their narrative is more likely.

That's specifically referring to the Cleary contract rumor, to be clear(y). I can understand construing the Carle/Jagr/Suter/Parise situation as limited by the cap, even if it was a matter of choice.

matt niskanen being a decent player and good part of the rotation, but having to move on because while the team has the cash to pay him 5.5 a year, he cant be fit under the cap due to more pressing needs

Why does a distinction need to be made between plan A or plan F. If they have the Cap space for plan A, they certainly have the Cap space for plan B or plan F

According to Helene St James the Flyers offered him 2.75 a year for 3 years. He used the Flyers as leverage.
- MJL

All that leverage and all he managed to get was a $1M pay-cut and a 1-year term. Sounds like he needs a new agent, or next time get Helene St. James to tweet that he was offered a bigger deal.

There has always been a max salary in the NHL.
- MJL

Max average salary, remember a few years back when the Rangers offered Sakic a 3 year 27 million dollar deal with 25 million in the first year?

The Flyers under the old CBA could have offered Weber a 14 year, $140 million dollar year and paid almost as much as they want in the first year.

Hey Bill,
At the mid-point, who do you think will be moving up from the Phantoms next season? How do the Phantoms look to you this year? Should the Flyers trade VL? Other than using on the PP, I really don't see how he fits into the lineup. I like his attitude, and leadership, but Chief is constantly moving him around as if he doesn't know where to place him. Same deal with Downie. I feel bad for Downie, because he wants to be with the team, but the constant shuffling of him has gotten into his head; my opinion. Do you think Mesz will stick around after the season? He has played decent with some more playing time, so I think that we need to be patient with him. Is Kimmo coming back? I admire his work ethic, but he has lost a step, and I can see that if his back is bothering him during the season that it might be time for him to retire.
Anyway, I can't wait for the second half to start to see if the Flyers can keep the wins going.
Thanks.

They often don't have the flexibility to add Plan A, or they have to perform some major cap gymnastics (aka salary dumps, buy-outs, franchise-altering trades) to make Plan A happen.

Not interested in ficticious examples.

Here's just a few offers that the Flyers have made recently.

9 years for 51M for a goaltender.

Offered Shea Weber a 14 year deal worth 110M in the form of an offer sheet.

Made offers to both Ryan Suter and Zach Parise for over 100M each.

They signed Streit and Lecavalier this past off season.

And I'm pretty sure that the Flyers will be involved in something significant this off season.

And we're supposed to believe that the Cap is stopping the Flyers from making the moves they want to make?

eh. they can be interwoven to some degree. based upon the personnel, its not wise to invest cap capital in this player/this position ect. to me, the cap plays a role in determining your personnel makeup, and your personnel effectively governs where you should allocate available cap.

All of that is part of working in a Salary Cap. It's how the game is played. Using all the rules of the Cap to your advantage.

No matter what scenario, he believes nothing is a result of the cap. If the team doesn't have enough to re-sign a certain player, they didn't scout their own player well enough or know the market well enough or they just decided they'd rather have other players they signed earlier.

The Offer Sheet the Rangers made to Sakic was 3 years and 21M. With a 15M signing bonus. There has always been a maximum salary in the NHL.

Every team has the same amount of money to spend. How they choose to spend it and on whom, is indeed a choice. How is it not? If a team doesn't have the Cap space to sign player A and they want to. They have a choice to trade player B to make room to sign player A. It's all choices. The cap is the same for every team.

If you want to say that the Cap stops teams from spending unlimited amounts of money on an unlimited amount of players, that would be accurate. But it's the same for every team. And every team has to make choices and decide how to allocate the cap space that they have. And how much of it to spend. One team decides not to spend all of it's money, and one team does. But the latter has a cap problem and the other doesn't? They're both in the same boat.

i wont speak for what someone else believes or not, but the cap is definitely a factor in building a team. it prevents a team from being able to do whatever they want contract wise. that being said, it shouldnt prevent a team from being able to make moves or field a competitive team unless they have severely mismanaged it.

Think Sakic has the single-season compensation record at $16M+, but I think Jeremy Welsh has the official single-season record cap hit of $17,945,000, although he only earned 1-games worth of that.
