I agree with you. I think there are too many rules. The NBA has the same problem. They keep trying alter the rules to fix the game. The best thing these leagues can do is allow more of a free market. - PhillySportsGuy
It really is. Why punish big teams for having a fan base and spending money so you can help the little team compete by allowing them to share the money and pay players who otherwise would have went to the bigger market team?
It hurts the players and the brand of hockey. Look at the Panthers. No reason they should exist. Unless the owner wants to lose money. Which I'm fine with, as long as my team isn't punished for it.
You can't buy a championship. If you could, the Flyers would have had another one by now. |

There's plenty of reasons why they should exist. Need to have teams in all markets if you want a bigger TV deal. That's where the real money is at.

Philadelphia Flyers - 30-23-6
This Week: 16
Last Week: 20
Hit the break on a four-game winning streak and have been pretty good (26-13-5) after a 4-10-1 start to the year. And, hey, their best player gets to rest during the Olympic break!
Key Injuries: None. |

i realize it is an imperfect system, but i like the cap a lot. i appreciate the parity that it at least tries to implement. |

Reality is that there just isn't a perfect system available. Take the good and the bad.

exactly. and given the alternatives, i will take a capped world any day of the week over an uncapped one. i admit, i also have a soft spot for the teams in smaller markets. hockey is the greatest game on earth, and if revenue sharing can be implemented to help extend its reaches in the country, than im all for it. even non traditional markets can take hold with the right circumstances. if ownership can put a winning team on the ice, fans will likely follow. hell, the isles building was rocking for playoffs last year. look at whats gone on in california recently. its roots can be traced all the way back to gretzky, but now youre getting all sorts of youth leagues and training going on there. not to mention 3 very good teams. |

Or if they didn't trade the 27th pick for Steve Eminger...Could have had Josi, or taken John Carlson |

Damn that's right. Oof.
Nothing eclipses the Mike Ricci over Jaromir Jagr draft though. |

true. but hindsight and what ifs of the past can damn any team to madness. just have to look to what you can do going forward. |

There's factors that people miss there, though.
One Jagr was Czechoslovakian, and there was a very real risk he wouldn't come to the US and play. At the time the Soviet Union was teetering, and nobody was sure how it would play out.
The other was that Ricci was a safe pick. Scouts had seen and spoken to him. Jagr was a bigger risk, because of the limited access. |

Honestly, hindsight wasn't involved. I remember when the trade was announced, I was pissed. I was at a Pearl Jam concert and when I got a text from my buddy, Eddie Vedder & the boys could have left the stage and been replaced by New Kids On The Block and I would have been less pissed. |

No I know about all of those factors. This is more of a hindsight issue, not a blaming the GM/scouts issue. Just saying man. Like we could have drafted arguably one of the top 5 players ever to play the game, instead we took the scrappy center from Scarborough Ontario. |

It was awful. I liked the first trade they made that night, getting a 1st rounder for Umberger...then they traded for Eminger... |

hmm of trades in recent memory. i had mixed feelings watching the jordan staal one happen. i was pissed as all hell when i heard about the morrow exchange. a little whatever about the murray one. and in what seems foolish at the time, really happy about the iginla one, if only because they really didnt surrender too much. |

Isn't that what owners should be holding? - Flyersgod
Of course, but they sure like to act as if the players have them by the balls at the expiration of each agreement... when in fact, the real problem is always their inability to control silly spending amongst themselves.
Dolan, Snider, Jacobs and MLSE are routinely the most hawkish owners, yet are some of the wildest spenders. It's farcical. |
