Hockey is Canada's Game !! Gold Baby !! - keatondixon
Yes, a goal post and poor officiating really got it done today for Canada.
Congratulations? |

Here is Chara's 4, 5, 6 season.
Season Team Lge GP G A Pts PIM +/-
2000-01 New York Islanders. 82 2 7 9 157 -27
2001-02 Ottawa Senators NHL 75 10 13 23 156 30
2002-03 Ottawa Senators NHL 74 9 30 39 116 29
Also time on the average time on the ice for Chara was 22:20 in his 4th season, 22:16 in his 5th season, 24:57 in his 6th.
Luke Schenns time on the ice average was 16:02 for his 4th, 21:51 for his 5th, and 16:46 for his 6th.
2011-12 Toronto Maple Leafs NHL 79 2 20 22 62 -6
2012-13 Philadelphia Flyers NHL 47 3 8 11 34 3
2013-14 Philadelphia Flyers NHL 56 3 4 7 49 2
So by his 4th season, Chara was already a consistent big minute defensive defenseman. By his 6th season he would pretty much become a double digit goal 40 pt guy. Point of the story is by his 6th season, Chara was who he was going to be at the NHL level. That does not bode well for L. Schenns future. Please find a guy who improved from professional year 7 on because that is what Schenn has to do to be more than what he is this year. - psuhockey
Keep one thing in mind; Chara was 26 in his sixth full season, Schenn is only 24. The leafs didn't do Schenn any favours by keeping him at 18. Another year in junior, then one in the AHL would have done wonders for him. Schenn fell out of favour with Ron Wilson because he wasn't Brian Burke's golden boy, Jake Gardiner and didn't fit Wilsons view of how to play the game. The funny thing is Toronto had to go out and get 30 year old Tim Gleason to get back what they traded away with 24 year old Luke Schenn. |

Not to take away from what you said, but if my choice was to have JvR and "have to" get Tim Gleason, or to have Luke Schenn, I'm taking the JvR/Glesaon combo all day every day. |

Agreed, Chara didn't emerge as a top pair impact guy til his 6th season.
edit: I'm not saying Schenn will ever be as good as Chara, Im just making a point - BiggE
I totally agree with giving dmen the benefit of the doubt and sticking with them through the ups and downs... but there have been a lot of Chara references these past few days, in connection with Morin and now Schenn... as if to say development can be so unpredictable that we can dismiss the bulk of historical patterns to hold out hope that our Clark Kent will somehow step out of a phone booth one day wearing a cape.
I think Schenn can still be a really useful player... pair him back with Kimmo or Gus and let him do his thing. His ability to gain exits out of the zone with possession is surprisingly solid for a guy who's supposedly not that good at it. He has some rough edges in his own zone that can be smoothed out with confidence and experience.
But after 400 NHL games, I think it's safe to say that he's never going to live up to the franchise moniker, and there's really nothing there to suggest that he'll magically flip that switch one day. |

Austrian Ice Hockey Federation (ÖEHV) president Dieter Kalt has already said it was a mistake to name NHL star Thomas Vanek the team captain saying it was based mainly on his experience as a player and "this decision obviously went wrong." - bmeltzer

I don't think (many) people are opining that Morin and/or Schenn are destined to be #1 elite-level defensemen. More just sayingthat they COULD turn into them, although it's a very slim chance of happening. I don't expect either to be, and I'm still iffy on the Morin pick. But yes, there is a slim chance that either/both can be on Chara's/Pronger's level. There's also a chance Jesus will descend from the heavens and tell us that the Scientologists were right. |
