That isn't due to lack of idiots. Garth Snow, Craig MacTavish, Glen Sather, Jim Rutherford, Chuck Fletcher, Paul Holmgren... - KB3Point0
Not arguing but whether an idiot has wizened up or is simply shackled from being an idiot, the result is the same. |

You wouldn't believe what he turned down from me for Price. I still can't believe he was demanding more than what I was already willing to give. - Chest Rockwell

He had some very good offers, but he's discounting the other players that were going back to him. I wasn't ready to move them.
I didn't end up trading Carey Price, and landed Giroux. Honestly I still think I could've gotten a bit more out of Nucker, lol.

I regret that trade already. (so much that I'd reverse it while giving up a bit more ).
Good thing this is a free league. |

No, just being a Canuck fan is enough of a league fee. |

Wow!
You boys are really pushing hard for Tavares and Kopitar.
Did somebody add "seller" to my team name after Tavares's injury? |

Let me guess, you'd want a 1st rounder as part of the return for either of those 2? |

I'd definitely be more willing do deal Kopitar without a 1st as part of the deal.
But I'm pretty set on that as part of a deal for Tavares. I suppose I could be persuaded if the right deal came along without one.
But I've made it pretty clear that it'll take an overpayment to get Tavares. |

It's interesting how Fantasy Hockey mimics the real life management of a hockey team (probably even more so at times - me thinks more GM's should peruse these boards ). I suppose that's what makes dynasty leagues, in particular, that much more enjoyable/challenging
Edit: now if we can just ensure that we get the fillipina hotties/strippers for the end of year bash Vantel, line one.... |

This whole topic is difficult to discuss considering the semantics involved.
But I'm curious as to why you think this is a "rebuild" move rather than a "retool."
A rebuild involves the trading of the majority of the veteran core and involves a huge roster turnover in a short amount of time.
This takes a very long time to come to fruition.
The moves you mention typify a "retool."
They traded Schneider--a starting goaltender, which was a position of strength since they had another one in Luongo, for a valuable future asset.
Considering this, a retool would involve trading more replaceable players from positions of strength, like top-4 D and grinding forwards, for future pieces that you inject into the lineup to supplement the vets.
Less turnover, less drop in quality of play, and less time as a middling team (rather than a basement dweller).
As for my post that your "cup or bust" comment was in response to;
My comment was based on the "#tanknation" notion that fans are actually hoping their team loses games.
That's what I call a "fair weather" fan. You cheer when the team is doing well, but you're hoping they lose when things aren't going well.
Since only one team wins the cup every year, I'm well aware there is greater chance it's NOT going to be my team than the chance it will.
But I still enjoy watching my team win, and I still enjoy playoff hockey, no matter how short the stretch is.
I'd much rather get a 15-30th overall pick and watch at least four playoff games than not watch any playoff games and get the 8th-14th overall pick the Canucks will likely get if they miss. - Fosco
I agree with your idea of retool Fosco, but my fear is that there is a disconnect between the passion of the fans and the business aspect. GMMG is in a tough position. To save his skin I fear he will trade for short term fix to sneak into the playoffs. There is also the money potion from the playoffs. That revenue means a lot to the owners. So going back to the original conversation, my fear is that if we are in the 9-10th spot by tdl we will make a knee jerk reaction trade. If we tank and are in the 11-13 spot we might trade away vets for future. I would ove to see our team in the playoffs. But I don't want to the Calgary. They thought that they were always close to making the playoffs that they hung on to the vets for far too long. It is either we clearly make the playoffs or we miss by a mile. In between is the false sense of security space where we will make reactionary moves by shipping away picks and prospects for aging vets. |

I don't think Gillis is in the tough position many fans seem to think he is. If he doesn't trade his prospects and picks for a rental, and misses the playoffs due to the number of injuries the team has sustained, he won't be fired. As long as he continues to show improvement, he won't be fired.
There are no surprises or secrets between ownership and Gillis. They communicate very regularly. Firing him would be a knee jerk reaction by ownership. Make no mistake about it, he is their hand picked guy. |
