In light of this upcoming, highly-anticipated game, I have a question for you Flyers fans. If you could be at either game, would you pick:
a) 1974 Stanley Cup Finals Game 6
or
b) 1980 Olympics SemiFinals USA vs. USSR - jmatchett383
B
no doubt, as much as I love the Flyers the game itself was actually pretty slow and kind of boring to watch, while the USA/USSR game just might have been the biggest upset in sports history. Plus it was also a fast paced and extremely exciting game to watch as well!

It was, but to be there when Clarke and Parent paraded The Cup around the ice would be amazing. For the USA/USSR, I think it would be almost as cool to be outside the stadium in the streets. |

Paul Martin out with a broken hand. Justin Faulk in the lineup for Team USA. |

The Flyers will need to bottle what they had going before the break. They have the second or third toughest schedule in the east after the Olympics. - Jsaquella
That's tough to do with the long break killing that momentum |

LOL
It certainly was an amazing moment, though the way the fans charged onto the ice, they never really got their chance to skate with cup until the following year in Buffalo! I can still remember watching that game as an 8 year old kid who had just started playing hockey that year, it was just an incredible feeling listening to Gene Hart scream "The Flyers win the Stanley Cup!!" I'll never forget it!
And that leads me to... The 5 coolest Flyers games I ever saw in person. You'll have to pardon my memory, I can remember the month and year for all of them, but rarely the actual day!
1. Flyers vs the Soviet Red Army team, 1/76
To watch the Broad Bullies just destroy the evil empire was fantastic! I can still remember asking my older cousin, "Did the russians quit?" I can still remember the quote from Gene Hart to Joe Watson after the game, "When you scored, Joe, you set back Soviet hockey 20 years!" What a game, what a moment in time!
2. Game 7, Flyers vs NY Islanders, Stanley Cup semis, 5/75
Lucky for me, my dad's cousin got sick and got to go in his place! (he recovered and was fine, so don't rip me!) Kate Smith, Bernie Parent and the boys in orange and black stepped up and crushed the upstart Isles on their way to Cup #2!
3. May of 1987, game 6 Stanley Cup finals, Flyers vs Edmonton
JJ frankin Daigneault!! My friends and I actually thought the Spectrum was going to collapse when the place erupted following both the tying and go ahead goals. I still remember the chills going down my spine when Daigneault scored!
4. 12/20/79, The Flyers tie the Pens 1-1 and tie the NHL record going 28 games without a loss. The streak would eventually top out at 35 and with OT and shootouts, not to mention parity, I'm pretty sure that this record will last a very long time.
5. Flyers vs Edmonton, November of 1985.
This was the first game after the death of Pelle Lindbergh, and I'm pretty sure its the only time I cried at a Flyers game (actually I might sobbed a bit after Kane's goal in 2010, but I prefer not to think about that!). Thankfully, its not every day that a hockey game starts with a memorial service. Somehow, after a slow start, it turned into a fantastic game and a 5-3 Flyers win. Journeyman Darren Jensen had a stellar game in goal to lead the home team to victory!

Very true, though the Rangers may have the same problem as they were also playing very well leading into the break. |

My guess is the division ends up as:
Pittsburgh
NY Rangers
Flyers
Columbus
Washington
Carolina
New Jersey
New York Islanders
I also think that Columbus could be bumped from the playoff picture by the 5th place team in the Atlantic Division. - BiggE
I still think Carolina's got one more push in them...from what I see of them, this break could help them the way it could potentially help the Flyers, with some of their more banged-up players getting healthier.
I agree about the Rags -- they're good, and maybe a year ahead of us in the development cycle. Barring injuries -- which could hit anybody -- they should be the No. 2.
I'm...unsure...about the Blue Jackets. They're younger than the Flyers in some critical places. All things considered, I would like to believe that the Flyers post a better record over the final 23 games than they do and beat them out. But they're fast and they did have a stronger stretch of play last season, and they believe in themselves. Ugh.
I do think Washington's just not having the kind of season where anyone could reasonably expect a run. They just look out of sorts.
So. Down the stretch, the Flyers, Carolina and Columbus. I think each team has strengths and weaknesses, but if we somehow scare up another defenseman...
And yeah: Making the playoffs is freaking important. I look at the depth chart and yeah, I want another high-end player from the draft, but ultimately, screw that.
Making the playoffs is freaking important.

I like that they are playing teams that they need to catch and stay ahead of, much better when your destiny is in your own hands.

I can't do just top 5. Heck, thre's Game 5 vs. Montreal in 2010, Game 3 vs. Chicago in 2010, 1996 World Cup of Hockey Game 1 (USA/CAN brawl 20 seconds into the first-ever event at the Corestates Center), 1996 World Cup of Hockey Game 2 (Canada/Sweden Semifinals Double OT), Game 5 vs. NJD 2004, the Ottawa brawl game, a 6-5 comeback win over Carolina on a miserable night, Game 6 vs. Boston in 2010, the shootout vs. the rangers. A few others, too. No way I can choose. |

During the Finalnd/Sweden game they said he was under the weather I thought. Had Faulk played in a game yet? |

I didn't say it was easy, but those five were just amazing. I could probably list a hundred or more since from 1970-2004 I attended 80-85% of all home regular season and playoff games, but at some point I have to get some work done!

It'll also be a good indicator of their level of play. Can they elevate their game to hang in with the real teams in the league? We'll see. I'd love to see more efforts like that Sharks game.
That's not to say I expect them to dominate cup competitors 5-2 regularly, to be clear. |

Yeah, I was trying. I'd probably have to AT LEAST do a playoff/non-playoff list though.
Also, when the Flyers put out the 10-best game DVD set in 2004, the streak game was on there. Now, I know it's an important game and all, but in the end, it was just another middle of the year regular season game worth 2 points. I've never watched it, but to me, it's not an important game, because it's dependent on the 27 games preceding it. |

Kind of a random question, but does anyone know where you can buy a Timonen Team Finland jersey? Figured this would be a good place to ask and maybe this question has already been covered, my apologies if it has. |

Sounds like they're only available in Europe, so you'll need some help from across the puddle. |
