Luke Schenn - 2Real
That's one. Can you name another? No? Didn't think so. They have too many lefties on defense. I've heard a lot of analysts mention that and how teams always attack that side of the Flyers D. You mention Schenn, but he's their 6th defenseman. You can get away with only having one right handed defenseman if that defenseman is a number one defenseman that plays 27 minutes a game like Weber. Lmao; this guy said Luke Schenn. |

organ-ize-ation is mediocre from top to bottom.......i know, i know.....too negative blah blah blah........ - hogweed
It was the first time I saw them this year. ECHL teams handle the puck better and make better passes and more quickly. I really was disappointed. I dont know how you can evaluate talent in that scenario.
Also, saw that goalie Carson " Chewbacca" when he was on loan to the Reading Royals a month or so ago. Meh.

Paul Martin is a strong all around defenseman who is underrated. And yes the game is about transition, possession and playing as a 5 man unit. But even the best team in terms of possession only has the puck a little over 50% of the time, so that's where playing defense comes in. And why you need a blend of defenseman. And there is still a need for defenseman like Orpik. I would also disagree that the GM's you named don't understand the modern game.
And the idea of possession Hockey, is not a modern concept. It goes way back. The Soviet Red Army teams of the 60's and 70's believed heavily in not dumping the puck, and in reversing the puck and holding onto it in regroups in Center ice and in the defensive zone, before attacking again. It's not new. Hockey is hockey. - MJL
I get possession hockey has been around since the 60's and 70's. What has changed since then is the game is overcoached now. The Shero devised to stop the Soviets by stacking the blueline is employed by everyone. Defenses now stack the blueline, collapse into the center to block shots, and overload in the corners requiring the puck to move faster. These aren't new concepts just the speed and the amount if coaching is. You can not hide weaknesses as well anymore. Bruce Orpik has a place in the game but a limited place and not in an allstar tournament. It is why Grossmann and Schenn get eaten up the more minutes they get against the better teams but you can only hide them for so long. |

Actually in my opinion, Luke Schenn seems to play better with more minutes. Last year he was averaging well over 20 minutes a game, and he even had one game where he played close to 30 minutes, and he was a monster.
The top possession team in the NHL is the LA Kings. They have Willie Mitchell who averages 20:32 a game. Robyn Regeher who averages 18:43 a game, and also Matt Greene who averages 15:43 a game. None of them are fleet footed, puck moving defenseman. They have a blend of defenseman.

The US is lagging behind right now in top end talent but there are too many dinosaurs associated with us hockey that haven't grasped the modern game yet. Today's hockey is all about transition, possession, and playing as a 5 man unit not just on defense but on offense too. Brian Burke, Paul Holmgren and even Poile don't understand the modern game. Having guys like Orpik and Martin are a negative not a positive against elite talent. Sounds great on paper to have defensive defensemen but if you can't transition the puck you end up stuck in ur own zone leading to more chances against. Simply chipping the puck out might relieve pressure but gives the opposing team possession again to attack. Russia was the perfect example as they might have had an even better top 6 than Canada and struggled to score because their blueline couldn't get them the puck in stride. Luckily for the us, they are starting to produce elite defense prospects. - psuhockey
Yeah, player development down to the lowest levels is heavily influenced by the biases of a small coterie of guys at the top -- like Brian Burke -- who prefer jacks of all trades over pure skill specialists at every skating position. It's like tht generation of Swedes that was lost because they stopped emphasizing skill and over-focused on strategy and systems. I think guys like Kane and Oshie and Yandle are beating a path for future American skill players, but in the meantime, the guard at the top still needs to be changed. Brian Burke should not be part of the selection process... Period. |

Oh well, looks like Canada is coming home with the gold.
On a more positive note, at least none of the Flyers who went to the Olympics came home injured!

If the US couldn't win, I'm glad Canada did. And it's really no surprise that they did win it.

That okposo was left off the roster was a disgrace. That guy has played great this year.
Pretty clear to me why giroux was left off Canada. They really wanted that size and speed on the wing to employ that smothering forecheck |

I think they uses some kind of Swedish pronunciation of his first name. But they didn't skip him.
