Callahan's agent also has Vanek. It seems like he is going to take both of these guys to the open market, and try to hit the UFA jackpot, which I assuming he will. - Pete V
Vanek will get paid but he's not going to be worth the money at all. Lots of talent but no heart or character. Total cancer. I think cally might even be able to fetch more as a rental than vanek cuz guys like cally win a team the cup while a guy like vanek tends to coast or disappear in those moments. |

I generally agree, but I think I emotionally re-signed myself to Callahan being traded about three weeks ago, so at this point, I would be really excited by the return (which I think is real good for the Rangers short-term). - Pete V
Two schools of thought. Get something that helps now or get a few assets that may help in the future. The only thing that would kill the Rangers is if they keep him and he leaves for nothing. |

Out of curiosity when has Cally won a cup? I do agree that Vanek is not worth over 7.5 million but he will get it. |

He hasnt, but its those gritty lockerroom guys that often make the difference. Bickel last year, brown the year before, a guy like marchand the year before that. |

I agree. But, I wouldn't take just any return. IMO, the return would have to be more than the Rangers would be willing to pay to acquire a similar rental player on the open market. For example, the Rangers paid a price for Clowe last year knowing that he was probably a rental. I wouldn't just take a couple of second round picks for Callahan just to get something, although I think we are all working under the premise that the Rangers can get much for him than that. |

I don't know who will command more a rental player in a trade, but if I had to guess, it would be Callahan. I think that because he is more of the type of player that contending teams would want in the playoffs when the games tighten up. I guess we will soon find out, but that's just my opinion.
But, I do think Vanek will get paid more as a UFA, no doubt in my mind about that. |

This is one reason I can't stand the Dustin Brown comparison. Not dragging Cally down for it but Brown got that money coming off a cup win as captain. If we won the cup this year, would you guys pay Cally $6M without blinking? Of course you would, even though right now we'd all hesitate to do so. Winning solves everything. |

Olympics kinda killed me. I saw the Callahan of yore in the Olympics, as IMO he is struggling this year even away from the puck (up until the the week leading up to the Olympics). I was excited by him and thought even if he wasn't a Ranger how I'd want him on my team.
One other thing I took away from the Olympics though is how under-rated Backes is. He is a damn good player and I'd love to have him. |

Vanek was out partying in the olympics while his team was still going on |

I will go ahead and agree with you a bit here. Especially in defending Vanek. Vanek has scored in the playoffs when his team has been in it and Callahan hasn't scored enough for a guy who thinks he is worthy of a contract close to 7 million a year. |

Backes and pavelski both. Never realized how good pavelski was in particular. Legitimate 1st line center. |

I would give Cally 6 million a year right now and end this.
Apparently it isn't enough for him and that's a lil irritating |

If he hits the open market, who would be the team to give him $6.875 million a year for 7 years? Buffalo? Anybody else? Wouldn't they even be a little concerned about doing that given some of the recent bad contracts they've handed out? I guess some team would pay it, but man that is an absurd figure. |

I hate comparing hockey business to every day business but to me there is an analogy there. If you were unhappy at your company and on your way out the door and your employer said "What will it take for you to stay?" Wouldn't we all throw out an insane number just to see if they would pay us that while on our way out the door? That's the vibe I'm getting.
EDIT: As in, hey, I want to test the market. Only way I won't is if the Rangers pay me an absurd number not to. That's exactly what he's doing. |

that's why I don't believe Buffalo would trade for the right to overpay him like that, I think they'll wait to July 1st and make that offer, I am still not convinced that's where he ends up though |

I don't get that vibe at all. I don't think Callahan is unhappy. I just think he is making the decision to put his financial security (to the tune of a few million more dollars) ahead of his desire to stay with the Rangers. I think he wants to stay, but I don't think he wants to stay enough to take 5 years/30 million (or something like that), when some team will pay him 7 years/45 million +.
Edit: Just saw your edit. I get your point. |

Yea I don't think Cally actually thinks he can get that money. He wants to test free agency and the Rangers have to pay an absurd number for him not to see what other teams will offer.
This may be the one time the Rangers may have better luck signing their own guy only after July 1 hits. |

Somebody will pay him. Teams always do. See Buffalo with Ville Leino or Tampa with Matt Carle. Somebody would gladly pay 7 million for Ryan Callahan. |

I don't see how he does anything to help a rebuilding team like Buffalo. By the time Sabres are playoff contenders he will be ready to retire. |

The only have 12.6 million to fill 5 spots. They need a back up goalie, B.Schenn needs a raise etc. Homer is a moron. |

Veteran leader. Buffalo is going to be so young next year, they need some experienced NHL forwards. Plus they have like 44 million in cap space. |

I think Callahan will get some very good offers from teams much closer to winning. I think this he wants to go back to play home in buffalo thing is way overblown. |
